Chris Ledlum entered the transfer portal too, but he's not eligible either.

Besides the aggregator accounts mentioning him entering there is like zero chatter about Lathon's recruitment on Twitter.

This is not a college basketball player anymore unless someone can show me clear evidence to the contrary.
So we spent so much time discussing a player like Domask... Move on and I am glad Brad focuses on Watkins but there is also a not bad chance we end up with Monsanto.

I despise the budgeting reasoning for not landing the first wave of elite players, then being told that we're going to land a big fish from those electing to come back to school, then going back to the budgeting reasoning for making choices.

Which other legitimate contenders are budgeting when it comes to NIL? Also, what other "elite" teams don't have a headliner or multiple all conference caliber players? The answer to this is the teams that didn't need to go to the portal for 7/8 players.

To me(and what do I know), this all comes down to not having the resources that we thought we had and being way, way off when it came to knowing what the market was going to be for these guys. It's probably more of the latter.

Watching Indiana mop up is annoying.
The only thing Indiana is going to mopping up is our sweat after we roll em

Not that we "need" a guy who drives and gets to the line, but who else would do that? Watkins took 12 FTs per 100 possessions. The highest among our current roster is White at 6.3. For reference, this past year, TSJ had 14.5, Dainja had 9, Guerrier had 7.2, and Domask had 6.5. Seems like we could really use some more of that.

And Watkins' steals/blocks suggest he plays good/better defense, but scouting is much more important there, so I'll defer.
Whose to say that White won't take the next step to 9 or 10?

A few days ago on this board, there was some talk about the possibility of Fears enrolling mid-year and playing this upcoming season.

How much steam does that have? Is that something we're working on and actively pursuing...

Or is it something like...door still open but slim chance and not likely?

DGL looking good in the vid. Looks like he's ready to compete for more minutes this year!

The math is still not quite mathing for me, but if it all works out for us, then I-L-L baby. Getting COVID year under the former rules requiring a sit-out transfer year (that happened to land during the COVID year), I guess?
NCAA, bastions of consistency
I don't really get it. Also any idea why he didn't play in the COVID year?

But if he gets to play another year then Domask should have gotten a medical waiver for that year.

According to my sources … He’s been granted another year … So I’m gonna roll with that until I hear otherwise …
Hilarious if true.

Can our donors stump up the money for him to sell that golden ticket to Domask?

No disrespect to anyone's sourcing but I'm going to believe this when I see official confirmation of it. It's an open-and-shut denial on paper, just like Domask, just like Chris Ledlum, just like Tommy DeVito, etc.

You can't regain eligibility you never lost.

This also explains why there has been zero attention paid to this very good player in the portal.

It must be some combination of having one year lost due to the old transfer rules and another lost completely to injury, with the COVID season being his forced sit. So his case is "you forced me to sit the year that would have been free so I would like it back" combined with a medical redshirt case. Compared to Domask who's grounds for a medical redshirt had to be argued instead of being cut and dry missed the full season.

Certainly no expert, and like you said I haven't seen it confirmed, but to me it's a different and stronger case than Marcus's.

No whining from me. I think they're both good players, but I prefer Watkins by a meaningful amount. My reasons...
- TS% 0.577 > 0.543
- Higher rates for rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks (his steals alone more than make up for his TOV%)
- Puts more fouls on the opponent (at least offsets his own foul rate)
- All of this even with ACC > OVC
- I'm not convinced the "savings" from Lathon would allow us to add someone who would be much of an upgrade to anyone else we already have
- Boswell's weakness last year was bad 2pt% without drawing fouls (I'd estimate TS% on those to be somewhere around 0.45 depending on how many FTs were from 2pt attempts). I don't think we have many other players to offset that. Those are both strengths of Watkins (~0.58) vs Lathon (~0.51).

The stats were Storr's & Lathon's. My point being that everyone was SUPER happy to get that statline early in the process.

I think the nuance is that he played in 2019-20, a season that did not end with a championship. Waivers for a 5th year have been granted on those grounds.

In short, he only had 3 chances to win a title.

My understanding is that he would enroll mid year and redshirt for the spring semester in order to learn the system, get to know his teammates, and get Fletched. Then he'd be ready to roll in 2025-26.

Fair question, but here's the progression of free throw attempts per 100 possessions from 2022-23 to 2023-24 for our players. I'm not seeing any huge jumps (and Harmon's went way down, partly from decreased usage, but also FTA/FGA). I also looked at free throw attempt rate (FTA/FGA) and prior years, and saw similar consistency from year to year except TSJ from 2021-22 to 2022-23 was a big jump. So it's possible, but not something to count on.

This could be complete nonsense on my part... but is it possible he's a grad transfer at this point? 4 years of "normal" school (granted at 3 spots), and then this is his grad year?

His dad was on X talking about the possibility of him playing this upcoming season. So he won't play this upcoming season even if he enrolls mid year? Really? Well...umm...I'm okay with that then I guess...

I'm fine with that but...I mean...this would've been pretty good:

Guards: Kylan, DGL, Fears
Wings: Watkins, Ty, Tre
4s: Ben, Morez, Booth
5s: Tomislav
Limited minutes/redshirt: Davis, Jakstys.

I get both sides here, but a lot of fans, IMO, are more so pouting about media folks like the Field of 68 just putting out a segment how we whiffed this offseason (along with Michigan State).

We have grown accustomed to attention and pre-season hype, but these same media guys in December will be talking about how Illinois picked the right pieces and they just overlooked it like they did on Marcus Domask last year.

I trust this staff's evaluation skills and building a roster.
Well the Field of 68 does have a great track record of evaluating things when it comes to Illinois.

Lathon is solid, but man, it’s quite a fall from “proven high-major producer” to “second-best player on a low-major.” Everyone was excited when it appeared close to a sure thing Illinois would get the former as its star wing. Now the mere suggestion that the latter would be disappointing summons elicits ten follow-up posts of “actually his stats in the OVC were very similar to Star Wing’s stats in the Big Ten/ACC/etc.” as if that’s particularly meaningful. Hmm.
