Kansas 34, Illinois 23 Postgame

Well, I'll start since you're here. Is there anyone we can plug in at Right Tackle or are we pretty much screwed as it seems that both Crisler and Gesky are guards who just don't translate to tackle. I'm guessing there's a good reason why we haven't gone in that direction already, but I shudder to hear it's because we just don't have anyone who can play it right now...

Many podcasters have suggested that Off Tackle is the most needed position by at least 70% of teams right now... They talked about it a lot on the Cover3 Pod...

I have no patience with those. I’ll watch us struggle against superior skills, athleticism, coaching, game calling, etc but will eventually tune out or walk out of games we choose to throw away on our own. Unsportsmanlike penalties aren’t mistakes. They’re ugly self-inflicted sabotage driven by arrogance.

I’m just gonna say it because Bret is going to address it with the entire team without a doubt and it’s more than just him … BUT … Between last week penalties and this week … Taz has KILLED us … At KEY moments …

Our SENIOR … CANNOT … Be having discipline issues and technique issues …

Another game where establishing a running game and chewing up clock...keeping the ball out of the hands of a very capable QB/offense...is the blatantly obvious required game plan.

Poof....down 21-0 before the spit dries on the anthem microphone. Was our defense on the field for 75% of the first half? My god. What a joke.

What do you expect from a defense that's forced to be on the field for 36+ minutes per game against those 2 QB's?
Again. The only drive in the first half that looked good. Running the ball.

I'll die on this hill.

Or at least annoy the sh#t out of everyone on the hill, talking about it.

LOL....thank you dub for making me laugh for the first time since our game started tonight.......classic line and so so true

Many questions for Bret after these first two games. But will anyone in the media ask them?
1. Why has the team seemed so unprepared for each game?
2. Why is the offense so vanilla until we are down two scores?
3. What is wrong with our offensive line? Do we not have more depth who are ready? Can we not bring some new guys in?
4. What is wrong with our defense? I know we lost some guys but we can't seem to get any pressure on the opposing qb, cover the middle of the field, or tackle. Why can we not set an edge ever?
5. Where is the discipline? Our guys are committing stupid penalties and chirping when they were down 3 scores. Inexcusable.

Unfortunately, if things don't dramatically improve 6 wins will be tough to find.
I will go with some contrarian answers (I want to start with 4).

4. On defense is designed to stop B1G teams most of all. Lets face it, B1G teams and especially B1G West teams are not know high power, high tempo offenses with lots of fast player. Just ask Michigan last year when they faced TCU. We look just like a typical "big, slow, stupid" B1G team. (I can spend days on this)

1. They got an baby bit fat and happy in the offseason but I can explain by point ..
2. Sometimes I think Lunney is trying to hard to "Wisconsinify"his offense at times. I wonder if the "comeback offense" is the offense he really wants to run?
3. Not enough experienced depth yet.
5. We were always kinda mouthy and Devon Witherspoon has a master of the dark arts of not getting PI. Now we are not smart enough or talented enough to get away with it.

They're targeting poor Dylan Rosiek on every play.
Our LB play is just something I don't have any answer for. There is no gap awareness, coverage awareness, or speed there to make up for improper positioning. There almost needs to be entirely new scheming there as they clearly don't understand whatever Henry is trying to do on defense, but not sure that'll fix it either. You just can't hide bad linebacker play without shifting your safeties up and trusting your CBs in 1 on 1 coverage. And that's something that we almost certainly shouldn't do, but I just don't know if we have a better answer. That unit has already been torched, and B10 play ain't going to make it any easier.

I have Spectrum cable which is in a holdout with Disney, which means all Disney owned channels are blacked out (even though I'm still paying full monthly Spectrum rate).

But I have Disney+ that I subscribe to, so I thought to watch through that. But no I only have Disney Basic+. So I decide to sort through the numerous packages and upgrade to Disney Trio Basic. In what should have been an easy transaction turned into a 2 hour long process of my credit card not going through on the website, me calling and waiting on hold with support, me having to log on to my computer and complete it with support, them still not being able to process my payment through Disney+, and then finally a crappy backdoor solution where they recommend I had to upgrade my subscription via HULU to purchase the trio bundle package with ESPN+.

OK I think, this saga is finally over. All I have to do is download the ESPN app on my TV, sign in, and I'll be good to go. I sign in and go to the game, and it simply won't validate my credentials via Hulu. I even try logging in on my phone, thinking I could stream through my phone to the TV as a solution. But no, apparently, with this subscription via Hulu, I don't have the credentials to watch LIVE ESPN2 on ESPN+.

Desperately looking for a solution, I go to YouTubeTV and remember something about a free trial, but then remember I used that to watch another out of subscription Illini game where they played terribly and lost. The choice then was $72 monthly sub to watch the game. I walked outside, grabbed a Pacifico, and let the sounds of Brian Barnhart take me away on a beautiful Illinois night on the prairie.

I think I made the best choice.

When I watch our defensive scheme on a 1st down play by the opponents and the way we are lined up it reminds me of a prevent defense.....3-4 down D linemen.... 1 LB and 5-6 D players at various yards off the line......

Has Seth Cloeman made a tackle yet this year.....i can't remember hearing his name called and seems like the only time I hear the veteran Barnes named called is being guilty of a penalty..........

I guess we should be very happy that our D last year led the nation in lowest PPG D.....this year is gonna be a long season if the D doesn't improve .....a lot..............................

My thoughts -

Good to see the TEs involved and they came up big.

Altmyer is gritty and a gamer.

Seemed the offense had more success going no huddle and playing fast. Wish they would have kept the pedal down the entire second half (and the first half too).

McCray looked less tentative this game.

Bryant's missed catch turn int was killer (and gave me PTSD reminders of 2 yrs ago).

Too many penalties, 3/4 of KUs first half TD drives were sustained by either personal foul or PI. We are not good enough to overcome self inflicted wounds like that
and these slow starts are hard to overcome. Hopefully the both sides of the ball can settle down and just play from kickoff

proud that they didn't quit, hopefully they can build on that
I'll give you one more: Hugh Robertson looked good. Pinned Kansas 3-4 times inside the 20.

Sorry folks, ‘not too many ways to spin this one. Offense wasn’t great but defense was a total fail. ‘Can’t give up nearly 550 yards to Kanas and expect to win very many. We’ll soon see how the team responds but expectations took a serious hit tonight.

The good news is we won't play a team like this the rest of the year. Bielema's job is to beat B1G West teams and we can still do that (with cleaning some things up).

You could argue Finn and Daniels are the 2 best QBs we see this year. Allar is good, but inexperienced.
Heck I will go one farther, the only QB we faced in thee last two years that might be better than those two might be JJ McCarthy (I will also add Brennan Armstrong that trainwreck of an O-Line at Virginia did not destroy him yet)

Genuinely asking some of you guys that are better at X's and O's....Is it just me, or did we not commit to the run enough early in the game?

Inexperienced QB, amped up crowd, night game, playing against an explosive offense. Run, run, run, and run some more.

We also have a pretty accurate QB and 2 WRs that seem to get positive yardage every time they touch the ball (Williams and Beatty). Those quick passes seem to work pretty well for glorified running plays and get Luke's confidence up.

Completely agree! All 4 punts of his were inside the 20. Sadly after 3 of those 4 punts Kansas had scoring drives of 82 yards, 85 yards, and 94 yards!

The defense needs to do much better in these situations. Only one 3 and out was forced after a Robertson punt, and the Illini offense subsequently went 3 and out leading to the 94 yard Kansas TD drive.

Just a brutal first half.

I like Bryant, but he had a bad game.
