This is one thing I do have a complaint about with Brad and scheduling in recent years. While he has done a fine job of scheduling the high quality games, he really needs to do a better job at scheduling the fattening cupcakes (300+ ranked) where no matter the margin of victory or efficiency stats, there is no way to overcome how badly they weigh down the SOS and Quality of Competition metrics. This year alone we have 5 opponents ranked 300+ and a 6th who isn't all that far off! There is absolutely no need for this considering there is very little difference in the ability of a P5 team to beat a 200-250 ranked team at home vs. a 300+ team. I've performed the mathematical breakdown on here before of why playing 300+ ranked opponents is so bad, as no matter what you do in those games it only negatively impacts your efficiency metrics and resume due to the quality of opponent hit, so I won't do it again, but just to compare coaches:

Brad:
2024: 5 300+, 1 250+
2023: 6 300+

2022: 2 300+, 1 250+
2021: 1 300+, 1 250+
2020: 2 300+, 2 250+
2019: 1 300+
2018: 3 300+, 1 250+

Groce:
2017: 1 300+
2016: 2 300+
2015: 3 300+, 2 250+
2014: 1 300+, 3 250+
2013: 1 250+

Weber
2012: 2 300+, 2 250+
2011: 1 300+, 1 250+
2010: 2 300+
2009: 1 300+, 2 250+
2008: None
2007: 1 300+, 2 250+
2006: 3 300+, 2 250+
2005: 2 300+
2004: 2 300+

Generally, the rule of thumb is 2 300+ ranked opponents at absolute most a season, something we were able to keep to 16 of the 19 seasons prior to the last two. The last 2 seasons though we've averaged 5.5 a season! It's simply really poor scheduling that shouldn't happen and just playing this many of these type of games can cost you a line ot two in the bracket.
I agree we schedule too many cupcakes, however, this year our SOS will more than balance out from the 7 games against AP-top 10 teams (as it stands right now).

Edit: For Kenpom it's 6 games against the top 13 but that's still very good.

Interesting research. I don't agree with that last statement. There's been a ton of transparency about how the committee works, and the deep cupcakes simply don't matter unless you lose to them, which is extremely rare. We'll have plenty of Q1 games this year, and no one's going to talk one way or the other about the garbage teams.

Houston was a 1 seed, and they had 17 Q3/4 games by NET (20 if you go by RPI). Only 1 loss in that group.
They were 8-3 in Q1.

Yeah if a team goes something like 9-1 in Q1/2 games and 20-1 in Q3/4 that’s gonna look better than a team going 9-15 and 7-0. Kinda a weird example but…

It’s more about your win/loss ratio in Q1/2 games and less about the shear amount of Q3/4 games. It’s even more exaggerated when we’re talking about trying to schedule teams ranking something like 75-150. Those wins mean little, but the losses hit hard later.

This was the low point for me, mostly because it killed any sense of optimism that year — misguided or otherwise — in the early season crib.

Witnessed that in person 🤦‍♂️but it is, for me, second to this one that was the beginning of the end of Weber in my eyes.

The 2015-16 Illini was arguably the most hopeless non-Weber team of the 2000s. With the injuries and decommits of the Groce era, if our AD situation had been stabilized by then Groce probably would have been fired. Alas, we had to deal one more frustrating "almost got there" Groce season.

Can we PLEASE not talk about those horrible Weber and Groce years? I still have to wear orthopedic t-shirts from those years, not to mention the lingering affects of the years of bourbon infusion requires as a direct result of having to live through those games and their aftermaths.

Minor nitpick, but can our social media team take like a million good pictures at SFC for the Marquette game? We often post pictures of SFC on our social media accounts where the crowd isn't even 100% full and isn't all that orange. Football does the same thing, where we post a panoramic photo of Memorial Stadium from the 2019 game vs. Wisconsin when under 40k attended and the balcony looks empty ... how did we not get a better shot of the stadium for the MSU game last year or Wisconsin game this year to use for this stuff??

Anyone here buying a one month subscription to big10+. Is it worth it? I can handle the $9.99 for three games, but i wonder if the quality of the games will be something i want to watch. Then there’s the hassle of cancelling.

If you had signed up right before the Ottawa game you could have watched all 4 Big10+ games for 9.99. You can still get 3 games.
The audio for the exhibition game started out bad but eventually was fine. And it's no hassle to cancel, you can do it right after you subscribe.

It's only worth it if you want to watch the Illini play. I hope that answers your question.

We have it and there are many Ilinois sports to watch including some old Illini bball and football along with women sports.

So the quality of BTN+ can definitely be hit or miss. In the early days both audio and video feeds were quite uh, well, we'll go with inconsistent, and the broadcasting was reminiscent of a school public channel. In recent times though, the video quality has become quite good, audio can still be hit or miss, and the broadcasting itself has become much much better. Plus it does give you access to a lot more Illini sporting events like volleyball, women's basketball, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics, etc if that's something that interests you.

Overall, I'm not a big fan of extra pay to watch packages, but I feel that BTN+ does give you exactly what you want for the money you spend and the fee is reasonable considering the Illini sports content you can get. Plus, the fact that they put all 4 basketball games in a 1 month window for those who only care about that I feel is a service that is far fairer to the consumer than any other streaming service.

So overall, while I hate pay to watch streaming sports services, I do think BTN+ does it the most correctly when it comes to giving consumers what they actually want for the money they spend. Hope that helps.

To add to what others have already mentioned, the user interface is pretty poor. Clunky. I find it somewhat confusing to navigate but if you are just looking for the latest game, then it should be fine. I think they don't put much work into designing a good interface. I think the keywords for the B1G+ website is that it is "good enough". I think until recently if you didn't finish watching a game and came back to it later it would not remember where you left off and it would go back to the beginning. I am probably wrong but it seemed even last year this is the way it was. I finally figured out how to watch previous games, though. If one uses the Event Calendar (I think that is what it is called), you can just enter a date to get to the game you want. Of course, you have to know what date a particular game was played. I just watched last year's NW game (Feb. 23) this way. You can find the dates easily by going to the FightingIllini.com website and selecting previous seasons (under the Schedule section). I just wonder how far back I can go on B1G+. So for me, that feature is very nice. I can watch older games while waiting for the new ones to appear.
