Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

#101
Couple of notes for me:

1. Whoever decided to change the defense in the start of the 2nd half (ultimately falls on Brad) ... What are you thinking ? Why quit something that was working?

2. Ty needs to play more ... Goode is an absolute warrior ... I wanted Ty over him tonight ...

3. Hansberry goes out there and just fouls ... That should have been Dainja ... We can debate all night whether they were fouls or not but at the end of the day ... Hansberry should not have been in the game ... And that's nothing against the kid ... I like him ... But Dainja was the guy matchup wise tonight ...

2nd half adjustments - Hamer-Time

1. Purdue is a good shooting team but they had to have used some of their post season luck for keys shots in that 2nd half.

2. I think we made the wrong 2nd half adjustment with edey. The key to the double is to just get him to pick up his dribble and then retreat to your guy. Also we should've fronted more.

3. The game is over and we don't have to listen to overly conciliatory Steve Bardo. He hasn't figured out how to not be balanced even if you have a former affiliation so he retreats to sounding like a homer. Not to mention his takes remind me of a high school kid imitating a color guy versus a more natural perspective.

We played the best defense that we've played this year, but Purdue's was better.

I'm not upset with this one. PU is a legit FF team, and will be shocked if they don't get there.

Let's take it out on ioway and make em squawk.

50/50 balls resulted in second chance points for them without fail in the 2H.

Our defense is predicated on stopping the 3, so anytime a team goes 8/10 in a half we’re going to have a rough time.

Offensively we played wayyyy too timid in the 2H. Seemingly no one outside of Domask seemed to want to have the ball in their hands.

We’ll see these guys again in the B1G tourney ship. Won’t mean much at that point, but let’s beat em them.

Why change the defense when it was working???? Brad has to take the blame for that bonehead decision. And Goode is useless out there Dainja should be playing those minutes period point blank.

What happened to Harmon starting?

On the bright side Illinois led for a chunk of the game.
TSJ was a shell of himself. Need to bounce back vs Iowa.

Nothing to be upset about. We played well. They got a couple weird loose balls in the second half and capitalized as well as hit a couple tough shots. We are good. And we were tough and physical defensively. They found the guys when we sent the double.
Plenty to be upset about. I agree we are good. But damnit we never win the big time home games anymore.

I thought the refs were bad, but at the end of the day Purdue knocked down big 3 after big 3 in the second half, got every loose ball, and offensively nobody stepped up outside of Domask in the 2nd half.

Guerrier disappeared after a couple early 3s, Harmon did nothing and missed a real good look late that would have put us up 1, and Goode was non-existent. Hawkins was ok in the 2nd half but Shannon never really exerted his will on the game like he is capable of(especially with Smith on him).

If we end up playing them again, I'd like to see Shannon on the left side of the court and just aggressively go baseline if they're going to try to guard him with Smith. He reaches a lot but he's simply not quick enough to stay with Shannon(Domask blew by him a few times).

Sometimes little things lose games. 3 times we stepped out of bounds receiving a pass- inexcusable. And in this game we had some super bad luck on scramble plays that went right to Purdue- randomly. Credit to them for hitting big shots off those plays.
Not sure why BU stuck with AH after maybe 2 quick fouls- would have rather had DD and his bulk in there. The tick tack foul on Harmon when Smith turned the ball over was really bad timing for us as well.
But overall a solid effort- too bad we have no chance for 3 seed now.

And QG left too many points at the FT line.

Everyone is frustrated, but to me;

1)TJ was a bit of a no show. If he plays at his normal level, we win.

11 points on 3/13 shooting with only two rebounds is unacceptable for a player of his stature in a game of this importance.

I said to my friends at halftime that I really hope Brad doesn't overcorrect Edey having a big half and let the guards settle in, and he did exactly that.

The non-call on Edey's 4th. The over and back that was some ticky tack nonsense on Harmon and the clutch long 3. Team played well, but Purdue just hit the shots the they needed too and we didn't.

Purdue was 8/10 from 3 in the 2nd half. That is how they win, not Edey's 30 points. Underwood let them get going with the double team of Edey. Bad, bad decision.
