Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

Fouling may have been the plan if you listen to Underwood's post game interview. They wanted to get to the 1 and 1 with Edey so if they needed to foul they could put him at the line and trade a possible 3 or 2 for a 1. Edey did miss twice on free throws. Who better to run up the fouls than Amani. He may have been told play him tight. If you foul, don't worry.
I thought using fouls was obvious, but maybe not at that speed. You could see Brad talking to AH and after #4 when Goode fouled he was talking to Brad during the FTs

Jusitn has come up big down the stretch in a bunch of close ones. He has been an asset down the stretch in the last half a dozen wins. He deserved to be out there. We can all play Monday Morning QB after we see the long, weird rebounds we didn't get down the stretch. Domask was cooking the last few minutes, we needed to space the floor. Justin got a wide open 3, he just left it short. They made shots, we missed shots.
You have to play pretty close to perfect to beat Purdue. A lot of stuff needs to go your way. In the first half it did, in the second half it didn't.
Maybe there's a reason he was wide open twice -- Purdue realized they had a better chance having Harmon shoot 3s than any other shot we would have come up with on those possessions.

It's not Monday morning QB believe me -- I've watched Ty Rodgers come up with rebounds for two years now that nobody else gets. He also drew the third foul last night on Edey by sheer effort and attacking the glass that few other players could have.

But again have to question Underwood's decision making. Really upset that he benched Shannon for last eight minutes of the first half, especially when Edey was out for some of that time and TSJ could've had easier time driving inside. I can see sitting him for 2-3 minutes, but we had lead during that time and could've enlarged it to 10-12 points by halftime. He's a veteran player and knows how to avoid foul trouble when he needs to. Note that he played entire second half without getting another foul.
Yup...this was one of my main issues with the coaching yesterday. He was auto-benched in the first half when he picked up his second foul. I get doing it for a couple of minutes but it was the whole rest of the half basically.

Know how many fouls he finished with? 2.

Who knows what would've happened if we let TSJ play the whole game. Could've been in more of a rhythm.

Justin Harmon makes 1/3 of the 3's he attempts. I'm not sure what percentage of them Ty makes, because he's never taken one. Choosing to space the floor was not the wrong decision just because it didn't work.

Not sure Coach should be upset about not getting a rebound when it matters at the same time he has QG and Ty on the bench. šŸ§
Just watched Brad's presser and had to come back here to say that this is IMO the most accurate comment in this entire game thread.

Also, as I loaded up the video I was able to tell my wife pretty much EXACTLY what Brad was going to say "Great college basketball game, they are a really good team, thats why they are where they are, ...." His schtick after losses is getting a little old.

Final note: I didn't like that he then proceeded to essentially blame the players for the loss. I am not trying to hate on Brad, but if he looks in the mirror he can find plenty of things that could have been done better last night.

I think we'll see PU again in the BTT. Would love to beat them there for a banner.

Would go a long way toward helping me get over these two losses.
Yep. It would go a long way toward helping me get over this yearā€™s Penn State let down; as well as as the 3 times we got Shrew-ed last year.

It really really would.

Iā€™m pretty sure we would too.

Edey has shot 323 Fts in 938 minutes (1 every 2.9".) In Kofi's last year, he shot 201 FTs in 859 minutes (1 every 4.3".) Zero chance that he has been fouled THAT much more. Let's see how he does without B1G refs in the tourney. Then, let's see how he does in the show against guys his size. He is a great college basketball player, much like Kofi (although much less athletic, IMHO.) It's probably a stretch to say he's a great, or even a really good player beyond the NCAA.

He won't make the show.

OK, after some time and reflection

1) We did play defense tonight, so it is still possible
2) They are a #1 seed and played like it
3) They have Edey, and no one else does
4) We played a real game and did not get home calls, but we didn't get screwed either
5) We are ok and I see us playing in the sweet 16, hard to guard Domask, Shannon, and Hawkins
Us getting to the sweet 16 will likely require us beating a top 20 team which havenā€™t shown we can do. My bracket(s) will not have us in the sweet 16.

Would think that it might work out well to send a guy to the foul line for offensive rebound as when they shoot 3's, the ball goes long and when Edey taps it back, we'd have someone there for the rebound..

this might be controversial... But I don't, as you put SOOO much energy and effort into winning the big ten tourney that it can sometimes deter your NCAA tourney success (plus even if we win the big ten tourney, I don't think that will have an outcome on our seeding). Also, quite frankly, I don't think we can beat Purdue.
I do. We beat them soundly for 30 minutes last evening, took hard punches, and came back to tie with 3:30 left. In the first road game without TSJ, it was a one-possession game with 30 sec's remaining in WL.

Bounces are different in final 3:00 last evening and we bear down on possessions and D.... hey, then we're all still kites on strings this evening blowin' in a post-victory-over-#3 euphoria.

If we get them again then I believe it's a toss-up once again.

There were at least five guys with minutes last night who are profoundly more likely to see an NBA career than Edey.

I said this last night and thought it was a hot take at first, but this morning I went and looked back at the previous NPOY in college basketball and now think it might not be so crazy after all:

Edey is the least talented face of college basketball in the entire history of the sport.

Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naismith_College_Player_of_the_Year

Naismith award only goes back to the 60s, but we're talking about modern ball anyway. He's going to win it twice too.
Oscar Tshiebwe is less talented than Edey.

People who say Edey won't play in the NBA vastly overestimate how good most backup centers are. I watched Cody Zeller get minutes in the finals last year. I'm taking Edey over him in a heartbeat.
