Good addition to a rather silly debate in socials land. The conference discussion based on the small samples and tumultuous nature of this single elimination tournament is tiring.

Playing to seed is a relevant point. Good thought.
This is the year that balances out the craziness of last year. Anyone making inferences based on a single elimination tournament just wants easy data points to draw conclusions. It’s lazy, but probably expected in today’s Twitter world.

IMO pretty fair assessment of the 16 teams. I might put ISU even a bit higher.
Besides Clemson and NC State who exceeded expectations, everyone else is just kind of doing their things. Besides U Conn and Purdue should be on the top (somebody might even argue against Purdue), it’s crap shooting ranking the 16.

And that's why people shouldn't make so much out of going home in round one. It should never be a make or brake your season thing. I want to move on every year just as bad as anyone else, but there is such a fine line between winning and moving on, or losing and going home.
Unless you're UK or Mizzou or KU or Duke or UNC or any team coached by Sampson or Pearl. It's okay to laugh at them losing in round 1.

Fun and random trivia ... number of all-time Sweet Sixteen appearances by current Sweet Sixteen teams, with the total number of NCAA Tournament appearances in parentheses).

North Carolina - 38 (53)
Duke - 33 (46)
Arizona - 20 (34)
UConn - 19 (36)
Marquette - 17 (36)
Houston - 16 (25)
NC State - 15 (29)
Illinois - 14 (34)
Purdue - 14 (34)
Gonzaga - 14 (26)
Tennessee - 10 (26)
Alabama - 10 (24)
Creighton - 7 (25)
Iowa State - 7 (23)
San Diego State - 4 (16)
Clemson - 4 (13)

Might seem like useless trivia, but it is a good reminder how happy we should be that we are slated to play in the Second Weekend again. A lot of great Illini teams have fallen short of that goal ... 3 teams above us on that list have fewer or the same number of NCAA Tournament appearances than we do. Win or lose Thursday, this has been a great season by these guys!

With that said, I am starting to get greedy ... let's keep the wins coming!
It’s been weird for me especially since the last time we made the S16 I was only 7 years old. I don’t remember much of that season unfortunately, so this was a huge deal for me especially after the dark days we had last decade. I’m soaking up every little moment as much as I can this season. It’s been a heck of a ride that I hope keeps going!

I have a very different but similarly depressing story, haha. The VERY first Illini game I can really remember was our 2001 Elite Eight loss to Arizona, which I watched with my dad as a third grader in Iowa City as one of the only Illini fans!

So, the first five Illini basketball seasons of my fandom saw 1 Final Four, 2 Elite Eights, 4 Sweet Sixteens, 4 Big Ten championships, 2 BTT championships and 2 #1 seeds, haha. The next FIFTEEN saw zero of any of those. It was a shocking fall from grace for someone my age who'd never known anything but winning, haha.

Now, the last four years have given us at least a Sweet Sixteen, another #1 seed, 4 NCAA Tournaments, a Big Ten championship and two BTT championships. It feels VERY good to be back, but it is a nice reminder that a program with our history, fan support, facilities, recruiting footprint, NIL money, etc. should NEVER experience such shocking bad results as we saw from ~2007 to ~2019. It now boggles the mind that there were some back then who said our expectations were unrealistic and tried to downplay just how consistently good Illini basketball was before that period (and now after!).

Haha I remember in High School just being excited to be in the tournament, some of my greatest memories were watching BP3 and DJ (hence my profile pic) in some great games. Beating #1 Indiana in particular was such a huge deal for me, as well as almost beating Miami in ‘13 barring a terrible call. It’s been a great joy to watch this team turn into the team to beat as opposed to the other way around. Hopefully my kids will experience the same excitement we’ve had over the past few years!

The first and second rounds were far from boring. We had our fair share of upsets....Oakland, Grand Canyon, James Madison, two of the four 11 seeds won, etc.

Now, what I think that you're referencing is all #1's and all #2's are still alive, though Marquette, Tennessee and Houston were pushed to the brink.

I don't think that this should be a surprise. All year it's been Purdue, Houston, UConn, then a big drop to the next tier, where you have Arizona, UNC, probably Iowa State and Tennessee...then another drop.

There was very little difference between the 3-6 seeds. You could mix them up and depending on what day it is...you could have a monster win or a shocking loss. We fall squarely into that group.

This tournament has been far from boring(Colorado vs Florida sticks out as phenomenal), but it being chalky at the top is most definitely true and I suspect it will carry right through to the Final Four.

I fear that everyone in UConn's path is nothing more than a double digit sacrificial lamb.
What I mean is, for a lot of people what makes those first two rounds of the NCAA tourney so exciting is upsets.

This year has had fewer upsets than normal with 14 of the top 17 teams in KenPom making the S16.

That made the opening rounds “boring” in a sense.

But having 14 of the most elite teams in college ball battling over the next few weeks makes the final rounds exciting.

Some people still have this mindset. One of my Illinois petpeves and something I'll always argue when it comes up. We aren't a "just be happy to be there" or "just be competitive" school. We're a top 15 program both today and historically. We should expect our team to earn some accolades on a semi regular basis. No reason to shy away from those expectations besides what I assume to be an attempt to protect one's own ego.

I kind of wonder if the combo of portal/NIL is pushing the “mid majors “ out a bit. Essentially they lose their best upperclassmen and that sucks. End of the day, teams with more NIL will win more often.

Don't like the newfound popularity of 'chalky' in the media (and somewhat here). Way too close to the slogan of a certain blue blood for my liking. Pass.
agree
I had to look it up to see what it meant . Guess Im just getting old

The first round was pretty great in terms of getting some big and fun upsets, it's the second round that was extraordinarily chalky.
Plus even if there weren't as many upsets, as someone who tried to watch as many games as possible, I thought there were plenty of good games!

FIRST ROUND - Thursday
#11 Duquesne 71, #6 BYU 67
#7 Dayton 63, #10 Nevada 60
#14 Oakland 80, #3 Kentucky 76
#7 Washington State 66, #10 Drake 61
#4 Kansas 93, #13 Samford 89

FIRST ROUND - Friday
#9 Northwestern 77, #8 FAU 65 in OT
#5 San Diego State 69, #12 UAB 65
#13 Yale 78, #4 Auburn 76
#10 Colorado 102, #7 Florida 100

SECOND ROUND - Saturday
#2 Iowa State 67, #7 Washington State 56 (was close most of the way)
#11 NC State 79, #14 Oakland 73
#2 Tennessee 62, #7 Texas 58
#3 Creighton 86, #11 Oregon 73 in 2OT

SECOND ROUND - Sunday
#2 Marquette 81, #10 Colorado 77
#6 Clemson 72, #3 Baylor 64 (was a 1-point game with 4:00 to go)
#1 Houston 100, #9 Texas A&M 95 in OT

I guess people were just REALLY hoping for more Cinderella runs? Because after watching a whole four days of hoops with my wife, we were both shocked that anyone thought this was a "boring" Tournament so far ... I think it's been great.

Thanks for trying to help, but I don't see a "page symbol" or anything else (except for the bookmark icon) next to the URL in my browser. Using Chrome.

Illinois not even mentioned in espn articles with sweet 16 as a topic. Purdue only mentioned essentially b/c they are a 1 seed and one of the favorites. Plenty of sec, big east, acc, and some big 12. Iowa state favored currently as well.

Espn bias? Just can’t get no respect? Both?

Ah, okay. I use Firefox. That Reader View icon doesn't work for some sites, but most of the time it works like a champ. I just get a plain text read and no media, but I'm cool with that. Here is what it looks like....

I was finally able to get it to work by popping out the side panel in Chrome and selecting 'Reading Mode." Then, navigating to the page allowed me to see the text in the side panel. Your suggestion of Firefox's Reader View was what got me there. Thanks for the help.

Another way is once you've clicked on the link, open your browser's menu and select download. You should then be able to open an offline copy of the article.

I think we as a fan base know how hard it is to make a sweet sixteen. To me there is some luck but having a good seed and talent helps increase that luck

I trust both team will come out prepared and it will mater who will execute. We cannot start slow or let their pressure affect us. We have to minimize turnovers and crush them on the boards

Probably too late as it looks as if enough solutions have already been offered but click on the link and before the pop up window appears do a "Select all", copy, and then paste into a text application. Unfortunately, everything will be there but one can pretty easily wade through it to find the actual article.
