Look, I am one of Hawk's biggest supporters and will wish him the best anywhere he goes (since he told us its not the B1G).
BUT, I have a question for the insiders.......
We were told that there was specific NIL from specific donors, lined up for both Hawk and Domask if they came back, and, that this NIL was not going to take away from the Pool for everyone else.
If this was the case, was it simply Hawk wanted more than what was previously lined up? Was the coaching staff not really pursuing him to come back? Did Hawk just decide that 4 years at one school was enough? I watched his interview with Goodman, and had mad respect for Hawk not wanting to come back and disappoint the new transfers, but was also surprised that he and BU had not really talked (unless that was a deflection).

Just curious really.

Regardless, he'll go down as one my favorites due to the hilarious, trolling, hard working EDG dude that he is.

Sounds like they are both ready to move on.

It's a good question given it seems there is a good chance he comes back to college and it seems the insiders have been clear it won't be here. INAI - but here is my interpretation:
Coleman wants to find out what he's worth on the open market, so he went into the portal as a safety net, he had some distaste that he was told he would earn something close to TSJ last year in NIL, then with the court documents that were made public including TSJs NIL, it was clear he was far from that - it sounds like it's not a deal breaker for him, but he wasn't going to make the same mistake and not have leverage again

The staff moved on and now have big T that will be the focal point at the 5, Morez who can play the 4 or 5, Ben who will be the stretch four and a better shooter, Boswell will be the one who directs the offense and frankly, while it sounds crazy to say because Coleman is a better player than any of those players, he likely doesn't really fit what they want to do this year and are at peace with Coleman going elsewhere. I think that is all there is too it - no hard feelings on either side, but it's time to move on

Oh and anyone who hates on the kid for it needs to get lost.
This dog won't hunt fellas.

Leave aside how toxic for the sport it is to have prominent personalities swapping teams like this, Coleman Hawkins being on a different college team next year DRAMATICALLY changes the relationship between our portal gains versus our portal losses and raises some serious questions about how we're pursuing our team building strategy.

Trying to launder that frustration as some sort of "hating" of Coleman personally is pretty darned weak and lazy.

Man, watching Ovi hoist the cup is one of my favorite sports moments in recent history.

As a DC native and long suffering Caps fan it was one of the greatest feelings I have ever experienced. I believe that Illinois winning it all would be one of the few things that would top that and that we will get there one day.

How many people did their undergrad at one school and decided that, as much as they loved their time, it would be in their best interest to pursue a grad program at a different school? Even if the original school has a great program sometimes its just best for the student to have a different experience and build new relationships. For a player he would be learning a new system, new style of play, different style of coaching. All of that is invaluable for someone that wants to have a long pro career that would involve lots of different teams and systems.

This is the typical cheap shot that degrades this message board. At no time did the poster say Davis would have "no adjustment" to the Big Ten.

All of the sudden the $1.1 million figure that we heard from Storr doesn't seem so unreasonable. Not saying that we should have paid just that the market has shown that number was not out of line
Desperate programs pay premiums

The sport is unrecognizable from what it has been for its entire century-long history and my patience with make-believe to the contrary is waning.

School? Grad student?

What's that got to do with college basketball? (For those living in Loma Linda - JK)

How often have you heard an basketball player stay in the same school for five years (graduate school included)? Current NCAA system sucks but I don't think that's even the main reason CH has to go to a new school. Four years in the same school with a degree is good enough for most college basketball players regardless NIL. (Of course, I image he would have considered staying if we were to pay him like $1.5M but that's not going to happen.)

I am losing interest rapidly in college basketball.
It’s been a tough off season for the game. You’ve now got the kid from Utah State getting 2 mil + marketing deals at Washington…it truly is just a bidding war out there.

All love for CoHawk doing what’s best for him, but to have a “all time” Illini come back to school and go somewhere else…what are we doing here NCAA

It has nothing to do with NIL or how we’re building our roster. Coleman loved his 4 years here and Brad is super happy and proud that he stuck it out 4 years. Coleman wants to do something different for his last year as does Brad. Simple as that. No harm in that either. Coleman will always be an Illini.

I hate the current system, too, but I think CH would have gone to a new school, too, in the old system via grad transfer.

Just kidding but maybe NCAA should be renamed Goodwill NIL basketball association.

So we get mad when players choose where they go based solely on money. But also get mad when a player is deciding on where to go/what to do for reasons other than solely just money?

Generally I'd be on the same page as you here, but it sounded like Hawkins was never coming back. If he's a late second in a terrible draft, he's not going to make enough gains to improve his stock for next year in a better draft.

I think getting drafted was his intent until everyone started dropping seven figure bags on pretty much anyone of value. However, it will hurt to see him in a different uniform. He seems to be ok giving up his short-term NBA dreams for a payday in college and $1.5M+ in NIL is a great nest egg.

Also, his knee issues have been discussed at length. What exactly is wrong, and why can't he seemingly have surgery to clean it up?
