That is a big negative for NCState. Archie is getting hounded by fans and media.

Small sample size, but 3 NC State fans at work that I asked & none of them wanted Archie. Said he reminded them of Herb Sendek. Don't know if that impacts Archie's opinion of NC State, but Herb was Archie's coach, took them to NCAA his last 5 years and left because of pressure that he couldn't beat Duke & Carolina.

Because he's actually a good guy and knows hes probably done after this season. He cares for the guys and wants them to succeed... unfortunately there are some deficiencies at the head of the snake that he NEVER addressed with a competent assistant coach. Its sad beacause Groce is one of those coaches you can legitimately build a brand around if he just had the help. Oh well.... on to the next one :illinois:

Three more wins--not impossible--and he's back.

Can we make an agreement? Can we all agree that beating a sad sack Iowa team does not mean Groce should be retained all of a sudden?

I don't have the energy to have this argument again and I just want to enjoy winning and thinking about what will be better next year with a shiny new coach.

Just chill. I thought we should have waited til the end of the regular season to tar and feather the guy, but we have almost 6000 posts on this thread. If people can jump the gun that much, I don't see the problem with letting a few of the remaining holdouts having a moment of their own.

I hadn't realized how poorly Shaka Smart is doing in Texas. Was perusing their board tonight and there is a long "fire Smart" thread on there already.

Shaka Smart could have done better elsewhere. Texas doesn't seem to be a good fit.

Texas (the university) doesn't care about basketball. Neither does Austin. There is very good to great high school basketball between Dallas, Houston and SA. However, because of that, the high school game atmospheres in those areas rock. I was at a ut game vs. unc that ut won a couple years ago and it didn't even come close to a sell out. That atmosphere sucked. Despite all the financial resources, it's a losing battle for fan/administrative/marketing support. There is no excitement around ut basketball whatsoever, and I don't know if that problem will ever be fixable.

I was shocked (no pun intended) that Smart took the Texas job after turning UI down for the very reason you posted.
Outside of the money UT can pay if you are successful, there isn't much support for basketball.

Shaka would be a great fit like a Georgetown or similar program as far as larger conferences go...He hasn't translated at Texas yet....not sure if it is the fit as a coach or the base that he has recruit out of...just hasn't worked out..

No way ANY run saves him at this point, the only thing he has going for him is he hasn't been Gottfried yet...

Don't know if anyone listened to the post-game show on WDWS but a caller from Peoria said that a recruit's(assuming Williams) friend told him that Groce will be back next year. It's at the 30 min mark of the podcast...

As much as some people want Groce to come back, I really don't think that he comes back next year. Those tears in the postgame don't seem like they were tears of joy for just beating Iowa.

ANY run? You mean to say that if we were to somehow catch blazing white hot molten steel fire and win the BTT, then make a run to the Sweet 16, or even the Elite 8......wait...you said ANY run.....Final Four.....and then he's gone.

I disagree.

As long as we're going there, why not take it all the way to NC?

Yeah- I wasn't completely sure that JG's fate was sealed until I saw the press conference. I am sure this has been a difficult season but that sort of emotion made me think he either knows something already or at least has acknowledged that he is on the brink.

There's nothing short of an E8 run that saves his job.

It is unfortunate that there is no way to frame a meaningful bet on this one, because I am certain that a Sweet Sixteen loss and confident that even a loss in the Round of 32 would save his job. Pretty much the only way he can get to the 3rd round of the Big Dance is to win the BTT outright. I don't see Josh firing the BTT champ.

No one thinks we're going to make a run to the E8 or beyond, but what about this scenario: we win 3 of our last 4, with Te'Jon continuing to improve and JCL catching fire from outside. We go into the BTT at 18-13 (8-10), on the NIT bubble, and then proceed to win 2 games there. At 20-14, we make the NIT as a 4-seed. Our run continues as we get all the way to the championship game, losing in OT to finish the year 24-15. Implausible, but could happen.

My question is, do you fire Groce before the BTT if you know that he's not the long-term solution (preventing the slim chance of an auto-bid)? Do you fire him before the NIT? If he, say, wins the NIT and finishes the year with 25 wins, going 10-2 over his last 12, is he still toast given the recruiting class? I think so, but it's at least a conversation.

I would personally fire him before the BTT unless he wins out in the regular season to finish 9-9. If that happened (unlikely), we'd be back on the NCAA bubble theoretically. I'd then fire him immediately if we didn't make the NCAA tournament. If I'm Whitman, one more regular season loss automatically results in a pre-BTT firing. If the team wins the next four, it's a stay of execution. However, missing the NCAAs is still an automatic dismissal and Walker would coach in the NIT.

Yeah, both the press conference and the interviews with the players outside the locker room were redolent with the unspoken words "He gawn".

What is the advantage to firing him before the team plays its' final post-season game? You strike me as one of the savviest posters on this forum, but I do not follow you here. Is there some coach we can get only by firing Groce before the season is completely kaput?
