I don't think they lose any sleep about Illinois but if you want to be a big boy program, you gotta act like a big boy program. Blue bloods don't act "thirsty" and neither should we. Like I said, reach out but do it on our terms

The blue bloods have developed very close relationships with these programs. They do not play tough, they cozy up to them and get players, despite being blue bloods. It has been more than 14 years since we've had a true close relationship with these coaches, including having our head coach personally involved. The last HC at Illinois who really got very close and personal with these coaches and programs was Self. He did not achieve that by playing tough to get, on the contrary.

This board is overhyped! I want to believe. I'm a positive man. I'm just gonna watch this play out. That's a good strategy to deploy

Obelix, you may be right but I know from my experience,as a coach, that college programs can come off wrong by acting too needy. I know of a lesser D3 coach that appears to need me more than I need him and I don't give him as much credibility. On the flip side, I know another local D3 coach that acts like he won't give my players the time of day and he ends up losing out on players he later admits to having wanted (to your point!). Guess what I am saying is the middle ground appears to be the way to go.

The problem is not that our HC's constantly follow them asking for players. We have not had this relationship for 14 years, plus we have been irrelevant for 12+. I coach as well and follow many of the AAU tournaments. The good recruiting coaches at HM's, and even blue bloods, have developed close relationships with the showcase AAU programs and coaches. We have not.

Just me or would hiring someone like Chin Coleman say a helluva lot more than making a few phone calls to major Chicago High School coaches?

Actions speak louder than words, right? They want a Chicago guy? Well...

So what are our chances of getting Smith signed today? If not Smith who else? My fear is we will just have to settle for whoever is left and it will end up similar to the Jaylon Tate situation and we get a player or players who aren't capable of playing at the Big Ten level. It is looking more like the transfer route is the best remaining chance to get an impact player

Looks like we are definitely in the game for Smith, but it won't be today. They are still scheduling visits...

Could one of our computer guys develop an algorithm that would condense this thread into a thread that runs parallel to help us old guys who don't have the energy to keep up every morning?

Honestly, I would prefer that to Mizzou. I'd hate to lose another big to Kansas, but we don't play Kansas and it would would be some sweet Schadenfreude for them to lose a "slam dunk" they tampered with.

As a person that is somewhat close to the situation, Martin never tampered with Tilmon. The entire issue right now for the mom is Martin never recruited him while he was at Cal. Porter, who played AAU ball with Tilmon, was the main person talking to him about playing together again. He always wanted to go big time (NC, KU, etc) however his high school career hasn't gone as plan. A lot of people in ESL wants him to go to Mizzou as Martin is still a legend there. I am not sure what decision he will make but he was NEVER tampered with. His hesitation to sign earlier in the year was indication that he had some reservation with Illinois knowing Groce would get fired at some point. It's a lot of local adults involved that hopefully won't ruin the kids future. It's a mess right now.

I think you're forgetting about Tejon and Trent.

We will be fine at point guard.
