It is safe to say that Scheelhaase won't be getting a position? Seems weird to not announce that if Lovie wanted him as an official coach.

Or, they may be wanting to announce after the job posting expires?

Yeah. My guess is they probably already have or are very close on the defensive assistant and 10th assistant. They're probably just waiting to finalize the OC and then announce them all together. I just thought since he was already on the staff and a former player there would be no harm to announce Nathan early if he was getting 1 of the positions.

I don't think we will land a decent coach if Lovie is not provided with a long enough opportunity to succeed. From the nonresident alumni I have been in contact with, they have suggested that the leash is getting very short. I don't know how much truth that holds, but I know that they have discussed holding donations after the next football season without a bowl game

This goes against basically the entire "vibe/plan" whatever you want to call it. Not saying it isn't true. But the only way I can see Lovie gone after this season is if he really doesn't care and isn't giving full effort.

Kinda feel like there's 2 "leashes."

The one that matters is Whitman and that one is at least 2 more seasons I think.

You could say the fans have the other one where support will just continue to fall off until an actual good year. If next year is a repeat of this year, it could get ugly.

I agree, but I think he needs 3 more years. Not to qualify for a bowl, but to have the right pieces in place. I think the program is being built correctly, I just hope we can qualify for a bowl game. Next year I think 6 is within reach if we can put any type of offense up.

This.... If we had a competent OC or offense last year we would have had at least 4 or 5 wins

I also believe 3 years is the mark. He has to turn over the entire roster. That is no easy task!

I wonder if the delay has anything to do with Lovie possibly getting some NFL phone calls? I am not saying he is, just speculating

Seems unlikely as the NFL is currently trending toward young offensive minded coordinators. More likely imo, is Lovie waiting for dust to settle with these NFL openings and find whose available/interested.

That is my best guess. Sadly if that is the case, we may be waiting for another month...Which doesn't help in recruiting obviously. BUT having a great OC is more important that 1 recruiting class

If an NFL team is looking at Lovie after two pretty darn awful seasons at Illinois.. God help said NFL teams.

Lovie is a top 50 winningest coach in NFL history and was fired after a 10-6 season to a no name coach, which the Bears have still not recovered from.

He went to a basement dweller Tampa Bay team and turned the team around, only to get fired after a clear uptrend in wins. This was a shock to everyone not in Tampa Bay's head office.

He came to a P5 conference with a limited roster of P5 players and has officially been coaching for a little over a year and a half. In which time he has had to establish high school connections, clean out the roster and upgrade talent at almost every position. I don't think many NFL franchises would be afraid to consider him now or even if he gets fired in the coming years.

I know it's all Veruca Salt, "I want it now" with college football fans... but I really can't grasp how anybody has lost patience with Lovie yet. Maybe I'm just setting the bar too low.

It hurt that he was brought in at such a weird time for his first season. In reality, that season should not count for recruiting or results from him however it FEELS like it's been 2 seasons but in reality its only been 1 year of real lovie football

Lovie is a great coach. He has proven as much...just sucks at hiring OCs

There’s no question that Lovie needs time. Unless there are other issues going on (which I doubt) Lovie gets a pass next year as well. Did you watch last nights game? How far off are we?

Mike Shula was fired by the Panthers. He was Dungy's OC in Tampa when Lovie was serving as LB coach. Another option?

#247
Is this actually happening? His contract with Illinois makes this pretty much a non-starter.

I doubt this is happening. Lovie is a straight shooter and has said numerous times that he is not looking. I think that Lovie is committed to end his career in Illinois.

i agree that a head coaching job is not going to happen,...Unless Lovie wants to return bad enough to take a DC or lower job?

Ending coaching careers? Now THAT we can help him do!
;)

Hey! We put coaches into the NFL. We're the cradle of future NFL "assistant special teams coordinators". It's a thing, look it up. :thumb:
