Yes, I agree. I would prefer watching a slower paced efficient game as opposed to an up and down shoot out. I am watching the BYU game right now and it is ugly, especially seeing them give up 92 points with 6 minutes still left in the game. Would take a low scoring defensive game over this any day.

So what if Bennett turns us down? Where do we go next Keatts?

I thought the exact same as Jerry Ratcliffe. He is coaching premium basketball in the best league with a team that has been pretty consistently top 25. Yeah, i'm sure he wants to come try to reboot a middle of the road big-ten team /s

Lots of posts here speculating about Bennett and perhaps most of you have seen this already, but, for what it's worth:

http://www.thechampaignroom.com/201...ng-illini-basketball-coach-search-news-rumors

News to me, anyway!

The comments are classic. The UVA tools who refer to Bennet as "CTB" make me giggle. Adding "Coach" to the guy's name is such an...ACC thing to do, and then to make it initials.

OK, maybe it's just way too late and I've been following this thread all day.

Ratcliffe is a moron. I've been going back and forth with him now for a while basically saying, Bennett may not come here (and honestly likely won't) but if Illinois has the money why wouldn't they make Bennett say no? His argument is that Bennett said no to the Knicks so why would Illinois bother.

Ok, yea so let's just not offer anyone who is actually worthy this giant pile of cash. He may have access but the guy is a tool.

Tony Bennett can get a bigger pile of cash anytime he wants it.

There needs to be a better reason.

As S&C said there's some great stuff in the last coaching thread. Take a look and post anything good!

This time our coaching search media echo chamber rumor mill candidate is Tony Bennett. Last time we all know it was Shaka. I've only looked at the first few pages but here's some great quotes from the media.

Who made the best recommendation? Dick Vitale!!!

@DickieV

These are just some funny quotes from Loyalty users:

DickieV just proposed that because he is a Duke homer. It just happened to be right on accident.

I know there needs to be a better reason and that's Whitman's job to sell.

But if you have top 10 money you better damn well be trying to sell it to a top 10 coach. If our better reason isn't good enough for Bennett then so be it. But let's not act like it's out of the question.

Fair enough.

But let's not act like a bunch of smoke from a few media types means it's real. We've seen this movie before.

On that Virginia board I saw earlier that Bennett turned down a raise not too long ago? They're talking about it like it's no big deal he'll just get one this time, which might be true. But man I'd be concerned if I offered someone a raise and they didn't accept it.
That's interesting. Even if I had the PERFECT job and wasn't money motivated, I wouldn't turn down a raise.

Either Bennett really doesn't care about $$ or he's holding out for something bigger.

Not thrilled about Bennett

Bennett won't ever compete for national champs. Slow down teams end up in close games because of fewer possessions. To win champs, you have to score 80 ppg. Duke, KY, AZ, UNC, KU, Syra, etc have high possession styles. Slow down ball can be playing not to lose. Bo Ryan realized this and changed his ways which took Wisky from solidly competitive team to national championship contender. Plus has Bennett recruited any high profile studs?

Would rather have Marshall or Miller.

Bennett?

I know Bennett is highly thought of but do we know how good of a recruiter he is? Will he do well recruiting in Chicago? How bout his deliberate style of offense? Do star high school players want to play that way, I would think they want to play a more wide open style.

He had a MCDAA this past year (from Indianapolis no less), Kyle Guy. He also landed Klay Thompson when he was at WSU.

I'll say this about his overall recruiting, kids wanting to play for him, Chicago, and his style of play: does it matter? The guy wins ball games, gets in the tournament and even recently, won the conference title that boasts the likes of Duke and UNC. I personally don't care if don't get a single Chicago recruit nor do I care if we crack 60 points in a game if we are consistently winning and getting in the tournament.

Quite a few flights over the past week to & from Wichita. Also more recently Indianapolis where the shockers open up the tournament. Not saying GM is our guy but I do know The search is over.

#2,588
Would also like to mention the flight activity in and out of Atlanta over the past few days, where M. Solomon (GM's agent) is currently.

Thanks for the updates. You are hereby nominated chief air traffic control specialist of the IL Coaching Search thread. Not exactly sure what pay you shall receive though.

From what I am hearing sounds like Bennett probably not going to leave Virginia but we are kicking the tires. Looks like we are concentrating on Marshall and or Bryce Drew. My guess would be Drew will be the new coach if willing to leave Vandy after only one year. I think he and Roger Powell would excite the alumni and the fan base.

Dan,
Any chance we can do a game thread of UNCW vs Virginia today since there are two coaches of interest?

I would argue that a lot or most Syracuse teams over the years are more of a slow down pace. They keep teams to low possessions because of Boehims(?) 2-3 zone and don't always exactly have the best shooters on their team. They only way they can play a faster pace is if they start turning the other team over.

Man, you miss one day on the thread, and it's like getting through Ulysses! Great stuff, but it turns you inside out and upside down! For me, I am still holding out hope for one of what I consider the big three, Bennett, Miller or Marshall.

However, I still trust JW not to go all Mike Thomas on us. He's got too much to offer to settle: Money, facilities, history (which coaches know even if high school players do not), and himself as your boss.

Like Billy Joel, I'm keepin' the faith.

I think the quieter it stays, the more likelihood is that we get one of those three...Bennett or Miller make the most sense. For the longterm success, either would work, lean towards Miller for me though.

marshall, bennett, or archie would be absolute grand slams and anyone saying otherwise needs to reevaluate. they are fun to talk about but each has legitimate reasons to turn us down, so not getting goes up
