It's a valid concern. Unfortunately people are jumping down your throat for it. I think after we had the recruiter that couldn't coach, people are desperate for coaching, when in reality we need both. Archie does check a lot of the boxes.

I wan't jumping down his throat. But hiring Gregg Marshall would be a flat out grand slam. Questioning whether he can recruit big time in Chicago is a question I guess since we have had no head coach here do it, including Self. The 4-5* kids we have gotten out of Chicago are because of recruiting first assistants which I'm sure Marshall would hire. Believe me, Lou Henson wasn't the reason we had a Simeon pipeline. Love Lou, but he was a fish out of water above I-80

So now we have people that wouldn't be happy with Bennett or with Marshall. Ok. Sometimes I think there are people in the fanbase more focused on getting the shiny, new thing out of Chicago than actually winning basketball games

Board consensus, March 14 - "Cuonzo just doesn't do it for me - didn't we just have a guy who could recruit but couldn't get results out of the what he reeled in?"

*Mizzou hires Cuonzo March 15*

Board consensus, March 16 - "I just don't know about Gregg Marshall or Tony Bennett. Can those guys recruit Chicago?"

We all know the negatives on Marshall - East Coast guy, supposed to be the heir apparent at UNC, already makes a ton of money and they have the resources to match offers BUT what if he is tired of outfoxing the coaches in the MVC and wants to make a move? Is Roy Williams close to retiring? It doesn't seem so. Is Marshall pissed at winning 30 games and getting a 10 seed? I'm not saying it is likely, or even a "good" chance, but is there a chance? I think so

I don't think the heir apparent at UNC is someone who is 54 years old like Marshall.

Those nice folk over at the Virginia Board seem to think we are a bunch of po dunk country folk in a run down city with an old stadium that's falling apart. Weird Cause Champaign-Urbana has a population of over 120,000 and their city is 50,000.

Virginia fans and alumni are from nowhere near Charlottesville. They're in DC and Atlanta and New York.

Just for the record, I'd be happy with Gregg Marshall. What the OP said is a valid point. If you're going to dish out $4-5 million on coach that guy better be able to recruit and coach.

Thanks, Matt. I'm very worried having Cuonzo on our south border. Terrible turn of events. Let's hope the eventual coach is a knockout hire, competition is upping their game.

Cultural fit in your base is actually a thing. Let's not ignore the elephant in the room that much of our lack of success in recent years is due to missing on a vast amount of talent. Xs and Os can help a great deal in mid-majors but big boy ball requires players.

Well, others can disagree, but I've always thought getting the top guys in-state required one thing: winning. Put together several BIG championships and deep runs in the tourney and those kids actually want to start coming to Illinois. We saw it with Henson, who again was no ace recruiter, that once we had a nice stretch in the 80s the big-time Chicago kids started listening and coming here. We also saw that Self, after success, was about to go crazy in Chicago before he left. Jabari Parker didn't go to Duke because Coach K is a nice guy or a "cultural fit", he went there because there was a good likelihood he would go to the Final 4. Whoever comes here is going to have to win with 3-4* - Bennett and Marshall can do that - and then the floodgates will open

Gregg Marshall has not "recruited Chicago" and has beat Bill Self who has "recruited Chicago". One game, I know, but he has won consistently enough that it ISN'T AN ISSUE. The guy can coach. Period. If he can take this job and make inroads into Chicago to make it easier for himself there so be it. If he wins here they'll come and play here, jerk or not.

Side note: Jesus as coach would make His successor's mock funerals for Him much, much more difficult - he'd be having one every three days.

Yea, I'm not too picky. I'd be happy with Marshall, Bennett, Archie, Keats, or Drew. I would be ecstatic with any of those hires. I think it's more likely the last 3. I'd be happy with Powell coming back to Illinois

I don't see Marshall as the "grand slam" hire that Bennett would be. He's actually third on my list behind Bennett and Miller. That being said, he'd be a huge upgrade over JG and I would be more than happy if he somehow ends up being our next coach.

The comments are classic. The UVA tools who refer to Bennet as "CTB" make me giggle. Adding "Coach" to the guy's name is such an...ACC thing to do, and then to make it initials.

OK, maybe it's just way too late and I've been following this thread all day.

And how do you think ACC fans thought of is call Groce "JFG?"

Update from insider on another board, this is the short list (in order):

Bennett
Marshall
B Drew
A Miller

I'd be thrilled with any.

Missouri made a great hire in my opinion. Cuonzo is now set up with Michael Porter Jr who has proven to be a winner everywhere. Can Cuonzo put anyone with him for one year at Missouri? The next year he gets Porter's brother who plays AAU with Gordon (committed to SLU I've heard that's shaky). Then you have Ramey and Ayo as possible PGs in that class. The next year you have Liddell and Hargrove. Not saying he gets all those guys, but he has been put in a position to be successful. It's really great timing for Missouri to hire Cuonzo. It sounds like Illinois has bigger fish to fry though, and I'm pretty excited about who we'll get.

That's a winner!!

Speaking as someone who grew up in Virginia, UVA has a rep of being a very elitist school. Couldn't tell you exactly why, but whenever I had to interact with groups from UVA, there is always an added tinge of arrogance. TIFWIW

Well it was founded by Thomas Jefferson.

Yes...sign me up for any of those guys. I would do backflips if it were any of those guys. I think Bennett ends up staying at UVa though.

There is always going to be concern with recruiting Chicago. The rumor was that Shaka was even concerned about it.

Lurker here, but long time fan. Wayyy more of a casual fan than most of you here. But a question.

Chicago recruiting has been difficult to say the least for a long time. It seems to me that won't necessarily change any time soon. It also seems that recruiting is becoming more national and less localized. There are only so many resources a program can throw at recruiting no matter who you are. Some buckets are bigger, but still. So would it make sense to basically just quit worrying about Chicago, since we aren't very successful anyway, and utilize those resources in other areas?

Ramey is already committed to Louisville.

There is no doubt that Martin can recruit, and I wish he had stayed at Cal. However, he has had great talent before and not done much with it.
