Illini Football: The Foot of the Mountain

Memorial Stadium
The Fighting Illini football squad embark on the arduous task of climbing back into the realm of college football relevancy Saturday in its season opener against Rutgers. The program, which has gone 11-26 in the last 3 forgettable seasons, is enjoying a fresh jolt of buzz because it is the inaugural season for coach Ron Zook.

The reality facing Illinois this year is more of same: most are predicting another 9th or 10th place conference finish in the solid Big 10. Quite a reward for the die-hard season ticket holders who have patiently suffered through a 7-12 home record featuring too many routine up-the-guts on 3rd-and-8, poorly-executed arm-tackling, and drive-killing procedure penalties. (Although the tailgating has been good.)

For the sake of the team's fragile psyche and the fan's eroding support, a Saturday victory is so very, very crucial. Filed under: Illini Football
