Illini Taste Defeat in Berkeley; Spartans Loom

Michigan State
First, the good news from Saturday's contest. Illinois did indeed control the first half and led #15 Cal 17-7 at the half. One can't help but think that if the Illini can somehow someway coagulate that intensity across the full 60 minutes they may be able to dish out a little punishment to conference opponents at home.

In the second half the laws of superior speed, talent, and size caught up with the Illini as they were outscored 28-3 and lost 35-20. Justin Forsett ran free for 187 yd and 2 tds, special teams game up yet another long td (79-yd punt return), and Illinois decided it was time to punt on 4th down trailing by 15 with but 4 minutes left in the game.

Now the #17 Michigan St. Spartans come into town to open the Big Ten season. MSU (3-0) has scored 40+ points in every game this season and are coming off an emotional victory at Notre Dame. Although State may possess superior speed, talent, and size over the Illini, MSU is dying for a letdown considering the overtime victory and home contest against Michigan that they should be looking ahead to the next week. This week's fun fact: the Spartans haven't lost to the Illini since 1992 Filed under: California Golden Bears, Illini Football, Michigan State Spartans
