South Padre Island Invitational

Illinois won the South Padre Island Invitational championship Saturday by downing Rutgers 77-57 behind 18 points from James Augustine 16 from Brian Randle. The Illini made it to the championship game when Rich McBride fed Warren Carter for a game-winning last-second shot against Wichita State in a come-from-behind defensive grind on Friday.

The South Padre Island Invitational shares a lot of similarities to last year's Las Vegas Holiday Classic: the on-site games are played with experimental rules, the games are held at non-traditional college basketball venues (high school gyms, convention halls), and fans not located in C-U unwilling to throw down money over the internet are most likely shut out from watching the action.
