Illinois Sent to San Diego After Big Ten Tournament Early Exit
March 12, 2006 7:12 PM
Today on "Selection Sunday", the Fighting Illini were assigned the 4th seed in the D.C. region of the 2006 NCAA tournament. The Illini will face the 13th seeded Air Force Falcons (24-6) from the Mountain West conference on Thursday. Unlike last year's fan-friendly road trip paradise, the Illini were dispatched to sunny San Diego, the furthest-possible tournament location from Champaign. The winner from Illinois' weekend bracket will most likely face the region's powerful 1 seed UConn Huskies in the Sweet 16.
The weekend started off bad when Illinois gave a lackluster offensive performance Friday night at the Big Ten Tournament and went down against the Michigan St. Spartans 61-56. It was the first time ever that an Illinois team failed to make it to the semifinals of the conference tourney. The 2 seed Iowa beat 1 seed Ohio St. today to win the tournament championship.
