Michigan vs Illinois: unholy domination

Saturday's contest will be the 90th meeting between Michigan and Illinois, a football series dating back to the late 1890s. Besides the 1950s when Illinois went 7-3, it's been all Michigan. They win close games, they win blowouts, they win when Illinois is good, they win when not-so-good Illinois teams keep it close. Even Red Grange's senior-season 1925 powerhouse squad went down to the Wolverines, 3-0. Below, a closer look at the domination-
  • Michigan owns a 66-21-2 (0.753) record against the Illini, and have won the last six.
  • Since 1960 the Wolverines are 38-4-2 (0.886).
  • The Red Grange "4 touchdowns in the first 12 minutes" (6 TDs total) game occurred on October 18, 1924: Illinois 39 Michigan 14. It remains the highest score by an Illini team against Michigan.
  • Kurt Kittner's 1999 (35-29) and 2000 (31-35) squads were the only other Illini teams able to crack 30+ points against the Wolverines.
  • The last Illini victory in the series was the 1999 comeback at Michigan. Down 27-7, QB Kurt Kittner led 4-straight TD drives in the 2nd half. Recap. Box score.
  • The Illini have a 4-20-1 (0.180) record the past 25 games at Michigan Stadium.
