Homecoming king: Illinois to give Deron Williams a hero's welcome

No matter how many years he plays with Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer will have a hard time getting used to the scene. He will head to the court for warm-ups in Chicago only to be greeted by dozens of orange No. 5 jerseys in the stands.

"All you see is orange," Boozer said. "You don't even see jerseys, you just see orange. It's like, 'Is this a Bulls game or an Illini game?' "

"Greatest fans in college basketball," Williams said.

"That's a bold statement," shot back Jarron Collins, who played at Stanford.

"You all wouldn't want to come in there and play, I guarantee you that," Williams answered. "North Carolina came in there and played, they didn't like it too much. Wake Forest, when they were No. 1, they came in there, they really didn't like it too much.

"It's a tough place to play there, buddy. Definitely one of the top five toughest places to play in college basketball."

Roger Powell

Roger Powell's plans a month ago?

"You know, I really thought that I was going to overseas," Powell said Thursday.

Though he wasn't opposed to a return to Italy, where he played last season, that wasn't what the former Illini wanted to do.

"And then the Bulls called," Powell said.

The Bulls provided the opportunity, and Powell said that's all he wanted: another chance to make an NBA roster. The Rev is three weeks into that opportunity as the Bulls and Utah Jazz meet Friday for a rare NBA preseason game at the Assembly Hall (7:30, Comcast Sports Net).
