Illini come back from the brink

Matt Eller
It wasn't too pretty, but it was a win over a decent Iowa team that has owned Illinois (and Zook) for far too long. What's more, it looked like Illinois would blow it and lose in overtime, but Juice and the offense put together a nice 2-minute drive to setup Matt Eller's game-winning 46-yd field goal.

Juice wasn't perfect, but was 7-10 on the game-winning drive. The defense bent, but held the Hawks out of the end zone on numerous trips inside the red zone early. I am critical of the timeout with 0:29 to go, and Vontae Davis' non-desire to down the clinching interception, but a win is a win.

Eller's kick was the biggest Illinois field goal at Memorial Stadium since John Gockman's 48-yarder tied the game at the end of regulation in the 2002 OT loss to #2 Ohio State. It was the first game-winning Illini FG since Chris Richardson's 41-yarder beat Ohio State 10-7 in 1991. Illinois-Iowa Postgame Thread (Forums) Filed under: Illini Football, Iowa Hawkeyes
