Beat Northwestern, go to Insight Bowl?

Good shot at bowl game for Illini

With a win, the bowl negotiations would kick into high gear. If the Big Ten gets two BCS bowl berths, the Illini would be available to one of the seven bowls contracted with the Big Ten. If the Big Ten gets two BCS teams, then the two-win differential rule is waived for the Outback and Alamo bowls, allowing them to pick purely on preference, according to Big Ten assistant commissioner Scott Chipman.

Such a rule is not waived for the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowls, he said, so those bowls must pick based on the winningest team available or one with one fewer loss. The Insight and Motor City bowls don't have any rules regarding their selection. They can just pick from the conference teams still remaining.

If so, Illinois could easily jump to the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., on Dec. 31. Not only is Illinois expected to travel well for a bowl game by selling a large block of tickets, but the Illini also have the massive Chicago TV market coveted by bowl executives.

Bob's bowl forecast: Insight

Illinois vs. Kansas
This is assuming an Illinois win against Northwestern on Saturday, which is anything but a sure thing. If the Illini win, and if Ohio State lands a second BCS spot for the Big Ten, all league teams will be accounted for. And that means more flexibility for the bowls, with the folks in Tempe grabbing the Illini over seven-win Minnesota or seven-win Wisconsin. The Jayhawks have taken a fall similar to Illinois this season.
