Illinois will know where it stands early

Maybe it's true that playing Ohio State early will make the Illini better. But it can work the other way, too.

It's true, catching a green Buckeye offensive unit in September can be an advantage. Maybe Pryor hasn't yet developed rhythm with his young receivers. Maybe a revamped line won't be in unison. And a Buckeye loss to USC, which wouldn't be surprising, could set them back.

Then, too, when you play Ohio State late, the Buckeyes' advantages in team depth gives them an edge because, by that time, injuries have become a factor.
