Leading 'men: Frosh stars Brandon Paul, D.J. Richardson take charge

Illinois will only be playing its second game when it takes on Northern Illinois tonight. But a pattern already is emerging with Bruce Weber's best recruiting class: When it comes to taking charge, you can't tell the freshmen from the juniors without a scorecard.

New guards Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson carried their promising preseason work into Illinois' opening rout of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Paul's 22 points broke the Illinois freshman-debut record held by Deon Thomas, who went on to become the school's all-time leading scorer. And Richardson got to the free-throw line (8-for-10) for 14 points despite a painful hyperextended right elbow that limited his shooting.
