will be hopeful over this winter. Holliday has something like 20 mil deferred over 20 years, nice retirement annuity.
The future is VERY bright with all of our OF talent, would love to see Piscotty own 1B like Albert a decade ago.
Maybe Peralta could split SS and DH

The thing is, our offense didn't lose this series for us. The pitching was terrible. If we are going to beat this Cubs team in the coming years we need pitching that can keep them in the ballpark.

I think Diaz is still a year away. Hasn't played higher than AA.
Holliday has one more year, plus an option for 2017. I like Pham, but am not totally sold on him long term. I like Holliday for next year. I'd also prefer Piscotty not to be long term at first base, but just next year until he can take over left field.

Diaz did play in 14 games for the AAA Redbirds this year, hitting .380 with 3 home runs. Not enough to guarantee success in MLB obviously, but he is moving right along in the Cards' organization. And if he succeeds at Memphis early next year, there's a chance that he could be with the Cardinals well before 2016 is over, IMO.

The biggest thing that needs to be done is teaching the bullpen arms 2-seam fastballs. 95 is becoming more and more common so you aren't going to beat MLB hitters with 95 and straight. Need that 2-seam that has good arm side run to keep the ball off of the barrels, even if it is a few MPH less than the 4 seam.
Happens all the time, but given he is a year or two from retirement, you have a point.

I don't think Peralta is going anywhere, not until next winter at least. He has been rock solid for us for two years, he just wore down towards the end of this year and got in a slump at the wrong time. It sucks, but with the amount of games he played and offensive responsibility he shouldered for a while this year it's understandable. He'll be fine and a solid player for us again next year. If just one of Holliday, adams, or Grichuk could have stayed healthy and Jhonny didn't have to play every single day things would have been different.
Same goes for the pitchers. Losing belisle and Walden kinda forced our hand with overusing siegrist, maness, and rosie. Those guys were just gassed at the end of the season and it showed.

That's what makes CMart so scary, his 2-seamer can be as good as any in the MLB.
Losing Belisle and Walden were kick in the balls. With them, this could be a different series. But we'll never know. Just wait to get revenge on these cubbies.
Agreed. I like Peralta and we really couldn't have asked more of him this year.
After carrying us for most of the year it seemed that pitching let us down in the end. Offense could have been better but, would hope to win at least one game getting 6 & 4 runs. Plus it seemed like we were always playing catch up. I think that affected the approach in some at bats.
As pointed out by several it seems game 2 was ultimately our undoing. It was going to be tough to win at Wrigley with all the emotion and a hot Cubs team. After the 2nd inning of game 2 it never got to the point where the pressure was on the Cubs. Not sure how much was known and when but, I really question starting Garcia in game two when he was ill. It's all hindsight now but, that game really set the series in the Cubs favor.

As far as the outfield goes...Heyward, Holliday, Grichuk, and Pham is a nice 4-man rotation. Plus Piscotty can plug in there if needed. Infield will be Carpenter, Peralta, Wong, and Piscotty. The only way Peralta isn't our SS is if we somehow find a great trade for him. He was great for most of the season.
And Colby Rasmus is a free agent. Backup plan for Heyward?

Lol, there isn't enough room in our clubhouse for that mullet. I think he soured on us when he was here the last time.
As far as Holiday and Peralta, its hard to move forward without your veterans. Holiday just didn't look the same when he came back. He kinda looked slow in the field and at the plate. We'll probably keep him next year but man, I just don't think he'll be our every day guy in left. I have never been too high on Peralta, but he was fairly consistent this year. I just wish he was a bigger threat at the plate. Any chance we try and keep lackey?
Don't forget jon jay got a 2 year deal last winter, he's signed through 2016, and I think moss has another year of control. We have a lot of pieces, will be interesting to see who gets kept

Disappointing ending to another fantastic year in St. Louis. I believe some changes will be made in the next few months, and I think signing Heyward should be at the top of the list. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't know the minors as well as many of you. Looking forward to next year (hopefully, much healthier), my biggest concern is the pitching and the bench, if we can keep our free agents.
Heyward, if the Cards can afford him, I think we agree he should be signed. Even if it hurts a bit, and it will. Holliday will be coming off the payroll soon, along with Peralta and both of their positions will likely be taken by affordable youth.
Waino appears healthy, pencil him in for opening day.
Wacha appears tired, first full season, should be stronger next year.
Martinez appears hurt, will he be back at full go? Shoulders are tricky, as we learn to often.
Lackey appears to be getting paid, will the Cards do it? Try for Price (or other Ace) instead, to keep away from small bears?

I think that Tim Cooney and Marco Gonzalez will be in contention for the rotation next year depending on the off season moves that are made. Cardinals have a lot of young talent as well, its just not as highly touted prospects that the Cubs have. Plus Mo is one of the best GM's in the business so you have to trust him
