Minor league guys, anyone ready for more than a "6th" starter spot? Anyone worth making room for, or will they go to the bullpen?

Tyler Lyons and Marco Gonzalez would be the candidates for that spot.

I hope they either sign Lackey or make a run at Price, if for no other reason than to drive up his price for chicago.

Waino
Wacha
Martinez
Lynn
Garcia/Lackey/some other free agent

Would be my hopeful rotation for next year, with the aforementioned Lyons and Gonzalez as your 6th guy

Yadi
Adams
Wong
Peralta
Carpenter
Holliday
Grichuk
Heyward
Piscotty
Pham
Garcia
Cruz
Maybe Moss stays?

This are the guys I see making up the lineup and bench

Rosie
Walden
Belisle
Siegrist
Maness
Harris

Are the guys I see as guarantees in the pen. I didn't check on all of their contracts though, but I'm assuming they are all under contract.

I know that's more than 25, they are just the guys who I think we are likely to see be regulars. There will be injuries and they'll all get chances at some point. There is still room for a other bullpen pitcher or two on that list, probably tuivalala or socolovich I imagine, Lyons and Gonzalez will be in that mix too. I don't think Choate will be resigned

I think that Tim Cooney and Marco Gonzalez will be in contention for the rotation next year depending on the off season moves that are made. Cardinals have a lot of young talent as well, its just not as highly touted prospects that the Cubs have. Plus Mo is one of the best GM's in the business so you have to trust him

Don't forget Tyler Lyons. Pitched quite well down the stretch.

Adams trade bait maybe? I can't imagine he'd be happy as a non-starter.

That would be OK with me. Assuming, of course, that the club can get someone of value for him.

I think he would have to rebuild his value a bit. I don't know how to do that if he is not starting 75% of the time.

@LangoschMLB: Impending free-agent Jason Heyward on possibly coming back to #STLCards: "This is definitely an ideal situation."

I've read that some executives think he won't reach free agency, and he'll sign with the cardinals shortly.

That would take the stress out for both sides. I vote "Yes"!

He's not a starter at this level though. He's a potential game changer off the bench. That's where his best value is, IMO.

I have to admit it's mostly wishful thinking on my part. I'm not a fan of our 260-pound slap hitter.

Here's how the Cardinals roster breaks down (per an article by the P-D's Derrick Goold):

Free Agents
Belisle
Heyward
Choate
Reynolds
Villanueva
Lackey

The Cardinals could get draft picks if they submit qualifying offers to either Heyward or Lackey and those two sign someplace else.

Under contract to long term deals
Wainwright (Signed through 2018)
Holliday (Signed through 2016, Option for 2017)
Peralta (Signed through 2017)
Molina (Signed through 2017, Option for 2018)
Lynn (Signed through 2017)
Jay (Signed through 2016)
Carpenter (Signed through 2019, Option for 2020)
Walden (Signed through 2016) Option for 2017)

Players with options
Broxton ($9 million with $1 million buyout)
Jaime Garcia ($11.5 million with $500,000 buyout and this is the first of two options the Cardinals have on him)

Arbitration Eligible
Cishek (3rd time)
Moss (3rd time)
Bourjos (3rd time)
Cruz (2nd time)
Rosenthal (1st time)
Adams (1st time)
Maness (though he has less service time than the others listed here he will likely qualify for arbitration for the 1st time)

All other players on the Cardinals roster are 0-3 years players.

So based on seeing this, what would you do with the roster?

@Cardinals: Mozeliak: Yadi will be having surgery this afternoon. 8-12 weeks of no baseball activity, but he should be ready by spring training.
@Cardinals: Carlos Martinez will have a normal off-season, spending most of it in Jupiter getting ready for Spring Training.
@Cardinals: Matt Holliday and Randal Grichuk will have normal off-seasons before reporting to Spring Training in Jupiter.

Mozeliak asked about Matt Adams: 1B will be a competition. Adams is capable of winning that spot #STLCards
KMOXSports ‏@KMOXSports 26m26 minutes ago
Matheny: believes Piscotty will be a plus defender in OF or at 1B if he ends up playing there sometime/ says they like him in OF #STLCards

Mozeliak on roster additions: looking for depth and options to give guys days off during the season to help avoid fatigue #STLCards

Mozeliak sees Marco Gonzales competing for fifth rotation spot or a bullpen role for 2016 #STLCards
One of offseason goals for Lynn will be to improve his secondary pitches, Matheny says. #STLCards

Mozeliak thinks starting pitching is covered. Mentions Waino return, Gonzales, emergence of Cooney or Lyons and Alex Reyes at some point

I am excited about Reyes. Just needs to work on his control; his pitch count has been an issue. He's usually around 95-105 after 5. His stuff is off the charts though. IMO, higher potential than CMart

I knew it wouldn't happen, but I was really hoping for a replacement for Mabry.

I really hope they make a run at Price. Chicago may not be as obvious of a destination as we once thought. I have some pretty decent intel that Maddon wasn't really all that well liked in the TB clubhouse, and that last summer when Price was on the trading block he preferred to come to stl of all the teams pursuing him. TIFWIW.

I don't believe any of that but if it were even remotely true I think $$$ talks more than anything.

I want Big Mac back.

He may know a players family who was on Tampa bay last year. He's trustworthy, I'd say.

Greg Amsinger was on the Fast Lane and mentioned that the Cards should go and get Price, if only to keep him from the Cubs. In a way it makes sense, but knowing the organization's philosophy it's silly to think about because it will never happen.

Here is something I wouldn't mind... Keep Moss since it's his finally year of arbitration, trade Adams (return won't be great but I'm okay with that, have Piscotty play first with Moss and rotate them both throughout the outfield, resign Heyward and rotate him in CF and RF, dfa Jay, play Grichuk in CF as the regular, dfa Kozma, keep Garcia as our utility infielder, look at the back up catcher market and see if we could get a better bat than Cruz, if we can't oh well Cruz will be sufficient again, rest Holliday, Wong, and Peralta more.

On pitching side... Have CMart, Waino, and Wacha penciled in (Wacha should not fatigue as much down the stretch next year), Trade Lynn (vivaelbirdos.com had a good article on what kind of return we would expect a month or two ago), sign Price (won't be cheap but we are the 5th most valuable franchise in baseball so we have money, and goes against our philosophy but still we have to do this at some point in life, plus no draft pick loss to sign him), use Marco/Cooney/Lyons as our 5th starter, resign Belisle (sp), get another lefty to relieve Siegrist, teach Siegrist how to pitch to lefties, hope Walden is health. This is my thoughts, what do you guys think?

I'd like to see them get another quality middle infielder. Can still keep Garcia if you DFA Kozma. Someone who you know can play, and can play well. The guy I want to see is Jimmy Rollins, thoughts?
