On the other hand, he could be helping us to save face and not publicly reject an offer (that we already made) by saying he just isn't leaving CO.

This is exactly what happened. George is allowing Illinois to save face.

George could have said this days ago. Why now?

Because they didn't formally speak until today.

I'm not saying he's coming here, but if there were back channel communications as many people have said he would have let them know then. Didn't need to formaly speak with them to tell them thanks but no thanks.

I am revising my original thoughts somewhat to think he is allowing Illinois to save face by saying "IF Illinois contacted me, . . . "

I am ransonably sure Illinois has NOT contacted him, in any official capacity. Perhaps, through intermediaries, it was determined to not be a good fit for whatever reason. George doesn't have to face any backlash at Colorado for even considering going to Illinois, Illinois saves face by not being turned down after offering him the job, basic win-win.

Sounds to me like there was a mutual agreement that Illinois would not make George an offer.

I would be shocked if the level of back channel discussions did not get very detailed and money discussed. I believe he was very clear on what he wanted and needed and it did not match up with what Illinois was prepared to do. Could be easier admissions for athletes, money for assistant coaches, personnel he wanted to bring in or most importantly the bottom line number and years he wanted in his contract. There’s no way he would come out with these comments if all this was still in motion. I’m guessing the expectations on both sides did not match up.

This is my read on it (no inside info.)

Agreed. I think he is saving face for both him with Boulder and for UI. I don't think he wants to disrespect Illinois at all but doesn't want to leave Boulder. My read is he says they haven't contacted him which at least saves the embarrassment for UI of a public rejection.

Problem is, now we have to go make a hire that hits with the fan base. Otherwise the game is up and our administration looks incompetent for "not contacting" RG. Ask me my confidence level that the people in charge won't Illinois the crap out of this situation..

I hope all of you are right that the people we'd want running this hire are running it.

Its all semantics. We have all interim people. Is anyone able to officially do anything? Even if we did, I think very little "official" interviewing is done for these types of things.

The interim Chancellor has already botched this up. She should never have hired a search firm. The only reason she did was probably because she knew she didn't have the experience to do this alone and wanted to play it safe.

The problem is that having a search firm contact Rick George is totally insulting to him and I'm pretty sure he wanted no part of that.

George was the AD everyone wanted and he may have wanted to come here if he was approached personally and with a checkbook instead of by an outside committee.

I'm pretty sure you have no idea what your talking about. George wasn't approached by an outside committee.

Can someone just promise me that for once we will get it right?

It seems like nobody wants an interim chancellor to make this decision (shes inexperienced, she doesnt know what shes doing) Yet when said interim chancellor chose to hire a search firm- people who do this very thing for a living-the folks here didn't want that either.

What do you suggest we do then? Have a vote on this board to pick the new AD? Have Dee Brown pick one out?

What people want is for Shahid Khan to take control of the athletic department, assuming that that means his billions become ours for the taking.

I make no judgement on how wise or realistic that is, but that is what the fans want.

And Khan is involved, FWIW.

She did say she was going to work with a search committee. Maybe not a firm like Parker Search but a search committee.

Dumb move when you already know the guy you want. George doesn't need an interview.

Classic behavior for an unstable institution. When covering your back ("but I hired a committee", "had a feasibility study done") becomes more important than directive leadership.

Kinda odd that there's not been any "rumors" on other candidates yet, isn't it?

The search committee is made up of UofI employees and boosters, not an outside group. Even if you think this is a slam dunk hire you have to cover yourself in some ways.
