Iowa State news… per source, Illinois' Alex Golesh is joining back up with Matt Campbell

http://FootballScoop.com/the-scoop

There goes the recruiting momentum. I can't imagine there is much incentive for anyone to stay other than Cubit. Who wants to coach under the current conditions? I'd head off for a fresh start with an up and coming coach too. Iowa State seems like a lateral move but I suppose there is more security longer term.

The good news, Minny and Purdue launched a lot of their assistant coaches, we can start to look there!;)

Can we hold out hope he'll send Banks on his way now that he's HC?

I don't really understand the Banks hate. Obviously Phair was a big part of the improvement this year, but Banks' D has gotten better every year, including last year, where they again were a large reason we got to a bowl game as they turned it on down the stretch (and didn't get lit up in the non-con while Wes and Cubit tried to get us to lose games until waking up in the 4th for every.freaking.noncon.game). He's improved, his players have improved, and I have no issues with him. The defense is not the reason we lost any game this year, and we only had two (really, one, because PSU was the worst combined ST/Offensive showing I'll see in a while) game where we gave up more than 30, were a top 10 D in S&P+, and really was the reason we won 5 instead of 2. I'd be fine keeping Banks, especially considering how hard it will be to try to hire coaches to replace guys who leave, we can't lose guys who are doing well.

Although, I guess top 10 D doesn't fulfill our dedication to being below-mediocre, so we should go hire Cubit's daughter for DC, or something like that.

I don't think that losing Golesh will hurt the program at all.

I don't think losing any of the coaches who came here during Beckman's 1st year here will be missed when they leave.

I can't think why anyone would think otherwise.

I think losing any coach will hurt because we won't get anyone worthwhile to fill their spots. At least the staff Beckman assembled reached a bowl game and developed a functional roster, whether people want to give him credit for that or not.

Well if you believe the party line from the DIA and the whole not ideal but best for the program no dagger crap, then continuity was a big part of that. Right now the only continuity is with the head coach.

And even if you don't believe that (I don't), the problem is who are we going to replace them with? Coaches not good enough to get secure jobs elsewhere or coaches too dumb to care about job security.

This is, not ideal, I would say.

What are the odds on Mike Phair staying - 10%?

Maybe higher if Cubit makes him the defensive coordinator.

Honestly, other than recruiting, I didn't love Golesh's coaching work. We regressed a ton on ST, and our RBs/TEs weren't ever great under him, either (although that can be tied to usage)

He only coached special teams out of necessity, and I thought he did a good job as recruiting coordinator in a tough environment, plus Ferguson is leaving near the top in total yards in Illini history.

What would everyone think if Vic Koenning was back as the Defensive Coordinator for the University of Illinois?

Scott Shafer was DC under Cubit in 05-06 and DB coach at IL under Turner. I think he got a raw deal at Syracuse. Spent time at NIU and Coached under Harbaugh at Stanford. If Cubit could get him to come here as a highly paid DC I think he could bring along some good coaches and possibly some recruits as well.

The defense has been improving steadily. Why blow it up? However if Phair leaves and Banks can't get a solid replacement, then I would be firmly behind shipping Banks off as well and giving Shafer a chance.

Jim Zebrowski from the Minn program has ties to Illinois. He has coached and his wife is from central Illinois. He was the Wisc Whitewater OC for s few years when they won big time.

How would Zebrowski fit in with the current staff? He seems to be strictly an offensive coach. Does he have recruiting chops?
