"We're too low down the pecking order, how would we get a top candidate??"

Welcome to Pipe Dream central: how about this scenario?
Khan throws some weight and cash around and we get Rick George, just like the article says in the AD Thread....
We throw a ton of cash at Chip Kelly from Philly, He still has strong ties with Phil Knight at Nike, he talks Phil into turning Illinois into Oregon East, new uniforms , newer facilities, the whole dog and pony show that they have at Eugene. That attracts athletes and players like bees to honey. We become the power and the place to be in the B1G.

With the firing of Richt, Jacob Eason and dad are pissed off. Looking like he'll be attending Florida. They were just on campus yesterday.

Hahahahah I love this scenario, but it won't work. [emoji25][emoji25][emoji25][emoji25]

Listening to the DP show the other day, and a college football analyst said if Chip goes back to college, don't be shocked if it's to a military academy. He's fed up with dealing with pompous boosters.

At this point, this is not happening. His high school coach has already said he remains committed to UGA and will stay that way until he gets a chance to meet with the new coach. Kirby could screw it up, but that remains to be seen. The FL visit is just a backup plan for now. To say that Jacob and dad are passed is simply not true.

The Bend: South Bend, Indiana
From some of his earlier comments, it sounds like the job at his alma mater was one that really appealed to him.

It's kinda interesting for Miami. He is an alum, from Boca Raton, played for Howard Schnellenberger, etc. But at the same time you'd be hard pressed to find a coach more opposite of the image of "The U" than a humble, softspoken Christian gentleman like Mark Richt. Jimmy Johnson he ain't.

Still, he's twice the coach Al Golden is. They will have success there.

The seniors on this year's Temple team are Golden's players. It's obvious he knows how to build a team. I think he can be successful again in the right situation. Remember how many people wanted to bury Rich Rodriguez after his failure at Michigan, but he went on to be a great fit for AZ.

Richt's first year will include a trip to South Bend (10-29-16) and the Irish will have 2 wks. to prepare. I think he's facing a very tough opening season. The ACC is fairly good overall, especially now that Duke is no longer a doormat. Clemson, UNC, and FSU will be practically guaranteed losses for Miami in the near future.

The service academy boosters aren't pompous?

Richt is a homerun for Miami.

Another excellent article on Nick Saban and his impact on the SEC coaching carousel:

Will Muchamp at Florida, Derek Dooley at Tennessee, Jim McElwain at Florida, soon to be Kirby Smart at Georgia, all of these coaches owe their jobs to their connection to Saban. The idea is that these guys can all learn how to win by having seen Saban win. But this is a flawed concept. If proximity to coaching greatness led to championships, everyone should just hire Teri Saban, she's been around Nick longer than anyone. That's stupid, right? Yet that's how much Jedi mind control Nick Saban has over the rest of the SEC right now, if you can't get Saban, get the next best thing to Saban, someone who has worked near him.

http://http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/outkick-the-coverage/nick-saban-is-the-michael-jordan-of-the-sec-113015

I think Kirby Smart will be solid, but disappointing for Georgia fans looking for a championship. That's the expectation. Muschamp would be a terrible hire for SC.

The SEC coach people should be trying to hire is Dan Mullen. He's winning some games with 3 star talent in the toughest division in college football. He could be a program builder at a place like Illinois or he could elevate a great program like Georgia to a championship contender. Georgia gets 4 and 5 star recruits all day long.

Why's it one of the toughest?

You're playing against the absolute best programs in America week-in, week-out and you don't have anything close to their resources, tradition or access to talent.

People who act like "Location in the South + No Admissions Standards = No Limitations on Success" do not understand how things work down there. MSU is the Indiana of that conference.

What jobs are still open at this point besides South Carolina and Missouri? Is it possible that some of our main targets this year (Babers, Schiano, Fleck) will still be available next year?

Babers is the rumored leader for the Syracuse opening.

Rutgers, South Carolina, Virginia, Missouri are the other power 5 jobs still open.

Memphis, North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe, Tulane also open.

Rutgers reportedly targeting Al Golden and Chris Ash

South Carolina focusing on Will Muschamp, Lincoln Riley among others

Virginia wants an experienced head coach - Brohm, Rhule atop their board

Missouri has interviewed Dykes, Wells, some rumors of Herman, but it is seeming like they elevate sitting DC ODom

There's a good chance it will happen. Eason to Florida is looking more and more likely

Them being in the south, and having access to fertile recruiting grounds makes it a nice job. Yes, the facilities may not up to par, and they are in the SEC west but it's not one of the toughest in the country. It's probably a top 25-35 job in the country

Supposedly the mizzou plane was in Louisville last night.

having access to fertile recruiting grounds

Mississippi isn't exactly fertile recruiting grounds. There's more talent in Illinois.

The cult of southern football does have its sway, and the mere association with the SEC adds cache and money, but in terms of your ability to consistently beat the teams on your schedule in the Power Five, Mississippi State is nowhere near the Top 25.

In the SEC I'd probably rank the jobs like so:

Georgia
Alabama
LSU
Florida
Texas A&M
Tennessee
Auburn
South Carolina
Ole Miss
Arkansas
Mizzou
Mississippi State
Kentucky
Vanderbilt

Fertile grounds meaning they're around it all. Midwest has talent, but give me a southern football player any day. And MSU has better odds at keeping a southern player home.

MSU is a above average to good job, and what Mullen has done is good but nothing spectacular. He's not an elite head coach, but is good enough to win 8-10 wins a year.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree. I just don't see how there can be 12 good jobs in a 14 team league.

That's interesting that Virginia is considering Rhule.

I was surprised that Southern Cal moved so quickly on their head coaching job. The players love the guy though, so that was a definite plus.
