Bill Cubit Fired

Because the coaching market is available after another season.

This is like saying you're going to do all of your Christmas shopping at 3 o'clock in the morning on a random Tuesday two weeks before Thanksgiving. All that matters in the end is that you get the right presents that your family wants (that's the big difference in this hypothetical, it is NOT the thought that counts in coach hiring). Maybe you know exactly what you need to buy and you can get it online somewhere. But all the stores are closed. If you just wait, all the stores will be available to you, there will be big sales, the world of Christmas shopping will be open. Why force it now and risk narrowing your options to things that your family won't like?

But if the right presents are purchased in November, then what's the problem?

There's no way Whitman does this without already having someone else lined up, right?

There's no way he does this unless he has someone in the fold, right? Not only that, we have to reassemble the staff. I don't know if firing a coach in March is crazier than firing a coach a week before the season starts, but we've seen BOTH in an 8 month timeframe

This would have made it worse, IMHO. No one wants to play for a lame duck coach. Everyone knew what this was and it was completely foolish.

At the end of the day, we're better off starting fresh and dealing with an awkward season instead of paying out an extension on a coach we all knew was gone. Expiring relationships don't work in the NCAA and recruits see right through them.

Why shop when everybody else is? Coaches can leave whenever they want to. Maybe this timing will actually work better for us.

There is no problem then.

And I feel like this puts Illinois in a weak position, but we should all be careful not to express too much certainty here I suppose. This is literally unprecedented in the history of college football. This has never happened before. We're about to invent the conventional wisdom of what a coaching search in March looks like.

How do you know there will be a coaching search? With a move like this it's hard to see Whitman not having someone already in the bag.

It may not be perfect timing, but it's certainly better than letting Cubit flounder and continue to damage the program for another season.

This is all excluding the elephant in the room, that Cubit was part of a regime that was found to have forced players to play through injury. We can now say that is completely behind us.

Well, then there WAS a coaching search in March, whatever. Bringing in a new coach from outside the program.

Unless we're going to have Mike Bellamy or something up there at the podium this afternoon. Who the heck knows.

Do we really want coaches who would abandon programs in March? These coaches would already have a class full of kids who just signed NLOIs a month ago.

How many times has something like this happened? I don't have a problem with the decision, but the timing could not be worse.

Bellamy is the only guy within the program who would make sense. But if you're going to stick with someone in the program, why not just wait out another year of Cubit?

Hopefully it is someone from the NFL that comes in and shakes things up.

I kind of agree with that. Would be bad for the current school. Unless they are NFL types. Who coached Whitman in the pros?

Wannstadt, Norv Turner? Not top of my list.

PJ Fleck has a mantra "row the boat". Whitman used that saying during his press conference. Coincidence?

What would you have Whitman do? He was hired late. He did the right thing despite horrible timing he couldn't help.

And we need to get it out of our heads that anything that happened before today mattered.

The new regime starts now. Past DIA moves are essentially null and void as illustrated by today's move.

What coaches are out there? Gotta figure its a former coach or assistant. I can't see a head coach risking his career by leaving his team out of the blue to come here.

In this case I guess Leslie Frazier makes some sense. Maybe someone like Greg Schiano?

I'm not sure if Tupper is just throwing names out at this point, but he tweeted an interesting name: Lovie Smith.

Got to be Frazier. Frazier's son played at Illinois--Kieron Frazier

As long as Whitman has his guy in his back pocket the timing...otherwise the timing is pretty terrible.

I do feel sorry for the next HC and trying to find assistants on such short notice.

Oh to be a fly on the first day of spring practice.

Can we at least wait to see who the new coach will be?
