Possible CBI invite?

Hey all,

Wanted to get your thoughts about our participation in the CBI tournament after the Big Ten Tournament concludes. Not even sure if this is a legitimate possibility. I am personally torn on whether this would be a good idea or not. On one hand, I find it hard to argue against playing more games and getting more minutes and experience for our underclassmen. On the other hand, part of me believes this kind of tournament is a bit beneath our program. As I am typing this I am chuckling about thinking anything at this point is "beneath" our basketball program. Just wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks.

I believe any post season tournament option would be beneficial.

More practices, more games, more opportunities for coaches and players to get better.

I don't think the team needs to be .500 and there isn't any post season invite that the team should be too proud to accept.

Do we really want to add more games to this injury bug season???? I for one do not want us to take anymore chance for someone to get hurt. All that being said if we win our next 4 games I could get over that really quick.

I think the guys need a break. This season has been hard on everyone. In most instances I'd say the experience matters, in this case I think stepping away from basketball and getting mentally ready and healthy for next season is best for everyone.

Also, would anyone really care if they won the CBI?

Going to the CBI might turn out similar to when we played Alabama a couple years ago after the regular season. We were not up for it and we got thrashed. Yet, this is a different year, which might be different, who knows.

Let's just win the B1G tournament and move forward in that lane. ;)

Usually I would say always take the post season experience and extra practices. This season, however, has been brutal and I just want to be put out of our misery. I'm good if we pass on the CBI this year. When's football season start?

You mean last year? It sure does seem like a long time ago.

I completely understand this stance. Let me play devil's advocate though. In doing so, I am going to assume we win the CBI if we go (I know, big assumption). As this season has been so brutal, would not a 4 game win streak to end the year make you feel better? How about the little boost of momentum closing the season that way would provide going into off-season work outs? Again, I see you point, but I think this may be a valid counter.

I can already hear the CBI chants coming from opposing fan bases in Big Ten arenas next year.

With SFC unavailable, we'd have to play the entire tournament in opposing teams' arenas. It would be very hard to get the players up for that. That said, if we are invited and accept, I will watch every game that we play.

I'd let the players decide if they want it or not.

Not worth it, pass.

Unless we make a miraculous run in the BTT, this season is over and will be time to concentrate in recruiting and the 2016-17 season.

Thats where I'm at. I can see all arguments on both sides. What's our current record? Assuming a loss today, would winning the cbi get us to .500 on the season?

I was leaning towards yes until I thought about how these guys needed a break. There isn't much good that can come out of Illinois attending the CBI. Let them regroup, focus on academics, and get individualized plans for the offseason. That being said, I'd let the players decide.

Illinois isn't getting invited to anything. Nebraska & Penn St. could get a CBI/Vegas 16 invite.

We're Illinois. We don't play in the CBI.;)

Pass. I don't see anything to gain from the experience other than another injury. Call it a wrap and move to the offseason.

Let the players decide, and see if we can play our home games in Chicago, or would Springfield count?

Agree. The last thing we need is one of our starters to get an ACL or to have an embarrassing performance in the first game like last year's postseason. Granted, whatever toxic element that caused us to play like crap in the last two games last year seems to gone but the possible negatives outweigh the positives.

Regroup, get minds and bodies back 100%, everyone stay academically eligible and hit the S&C program for the offseason.

That being said, I know these kids love to play ball so if they get an invite and really want to go, you almost have to let em go!

ding ding ding

I see arguments both for and against as being equally valid. Ergo, it really should be between the coaching staff and the athletes.
