Easier said than done, but IMO a key to this hire would be getting someone who can recruit Chicago effectively.

I think this is overstated. Illinois has been so terrible for a long time, I think we could have more success with a coach who can come in and recruit out-of-staters really well--kids who aren't as familiar with Illinois--for a few seasons and build some success here. If we're winning, then a good recruiter will be able to recruit Chicago well, too.

Chicago talent still matters though and again, this is a perception thing. Like it or not, the narratives that the media drives get noticed. Being able to recruit out of Chicago may not be the only way to build a program, but its certainly a huge piece to the puzzle.

Jon Scheyer, Anthony Davis, Sherron Collins, Jahlil Okafor, Jabari Parker, Jalen Brunson, Derrick Rose.

Realistically, I'd say we had a legit shot at 1/2 of them, some due to the fact that they wouldn't even qualify academically, but it's still a 'problem' in terms of the narrative.

Getting 'respect' back for the program matters, which is why the hire has to be a big name or at least a recognizable one nationally. I have no doubt that Whitman will be able to sell this job to cream of the crop coaches and that's huge.

Heard from very reliable source that Thorne is better than 50:50 on returning for next year. Docs are going to admit that they were in err regarding releasing him to play (Indiana game).

Good news. Hope he's right. Either way, hopefully the NCAA decides quickly.

I know what you mean, but it's kind of weird good news that the team doctors (for a team with ridiculous injury history, at least recently) made an error in diagnosis or readiness-to-play. I guess as long as he will be healthy long-term, then I guess it's good he can still play another year to help himself and the Illini...

#illini coach Lovie Smith was scheduled to have a press conference tomorrow. That presser has now been moved to March 29.

Thad Ward was officially announced today. The coaching staff is complete. Perfect time for a press conference. Why delay?

Somebody is telling us something about the basketball situation sometime soon.

It's a long shot I admit, but is Hoiberg an option if he gets canned by the Bulls next year?

I personally think there is about a 0% chance that Reinsdorf eats the $20 million owed to Holberg for the next 4 years by firing him after this season.

How the Bulls are imploding right now, anything could happen. He could also resign if he realizes NBA isn't for him

they've won 3 in a row and last night was the first time they've had Rose, Butler, Gasol, and Gibson all play in the same game since 'Nam. I've always seen Holberg as a more blue blood hire regardless. Ala Coach K replacement

Exactly. Theyve have had injury issues all year and are still in the playoff hunt. Far from imploding.

Maybe this has been talked about, but will Malcolm put his name in for the draft? See where he stands?

I can't see why he would do that, and I think he's pretty focused on making next year special for the Illini.

Fascinating thought, but no way he does it.
