There are a lot of players in the NBA who don't defend anyone.

You might want to take some vacation and come back on April 21st. That should be an interesting day.:)

Hey TCTORNADO - I'm back from that vacation (that I never took) and tomorrow is the 21st. Still think it will be an interesting day?

Simmons may not have the "killer instinct" but he's far from selfish. If anyting he needed to be, or show more, selfishness. To often he'd look for the open teammate vs looking for his own shot. If you watched any LSU games this year you could tell Simmons was BY FAR the best basketball player on the floor. His outside shooting needs to improve, but his IQ/ballhandling/passing/rebounding/positioning/etc are all elite.

Ingram can shoot, but I wouldn't say he's a better pure shooter than KD. Ingram isn't a great athlete, avg at best on D, & a big ? if he'll be able to physically handle the NBA(not very strong or big).

To me Simmons jumpshot(solid form tho) and being to unselfish are the main knocks on Simmons.

I was amazed at Simmons' skills and the apparent effortlessness with which he got things done on the court. At the same time, I couldn't believe how low-energy he looked during entire possessions until he touched the ball. I can see how lots of teams and fans both would find it frustrating to watch him play day in and day out. I know, production should trump "appearances", but he just doesn't look like he cares very much. No emotion on his face, no aggression, no feeling that this guy will just dominate people. I still would probably take him #1 -- his skills are that good -- but you give him Goodwin's motor and focus and he would be the 2nd coming.

Yet Cliff is still making 1.4 million over this year and next. Would it have worked out here, probably. But when you point to Self's biggest failure on why a kid should come to Illinois and you look and see he is still earning an NBA paycheck it's a tough sell.
Does this include the loan money?

Putting aside the slim chances of this even happening, but would Illinois take the trio of wings in Frazier, Goodwin, and Lewis on top of already having two wings Williams and Pickett?

Offense doesn't matter, Hill cannot guard an NBA 2 or 3. He's not an NBA player. Not to mention you could argue that he wasn't even a Groce recruit.
This statement assumes that defense is actually played in the league.

That's what I'm wondering too. I get that the staff needs to cast a wide net for 2017 but at what point does that become counter productive? In that scenario, I don't think we'd have a scholly left for Tilmon and then what? Lewis and Goodwin can bang but they're not rim protecters. Doubt Finke evolves into that. We'd better average 80pts a game if we land 10 wing players.

I could be wrong but I believe they have 4 more open scholarships after Williams and Pickett. I'm not sure how smart it is to take six freshmen in one class though. Not to mention the effect it could have on Tim Finke's recruitment.

Didn't take long into the April evaluation period to get into the "Does Illinois have enough scholarships?" conversation. :)

Yes, but Frazier is a combo PG not a wing. And we would find room for Tilmon. IMO, to be consistently good you must have a C and PG. Then fill the rest in with a variety of talent shooting/driving/athleticism/length etc.

Some people might say no because we need a PF. A true PF is nice if you can get one, but not a necessity. In other words I would much rather take another wing like Lewis instead of taking a raw PF who might need a lot of improvement.

I'm not concerned with the scholarship conversation. I know that it always finds a way to work itself out. My question lies within the makeup of the roster.

I get it. Groce can count. I surely deserved that. I'm more concerned with the allocation of time and resources than scholarship numbers. I've argued many times that us being the bridesmaid has been a positive thing since we've been closer to landing some of these kids than maybe we should have under the recent circumstances of the program but maybe narrowing the focus a bit could be beneficial? Maybe we lost Evans because of Brunson, maybe it had literally nothing to with it. Maybe you get Frazier if you tell him and show him he's actually the priority like you probably said in the in home visit. Who really knows but cmon, let's stop offering some random SF and an undersized PF from Ohio when you've got somewhere near 15 other guys you've keyed in on for, at the least, two years. Sorry for the rant, i'm changing my user name to ILLafterDark shortly

Always subject to change, but at the moment if Thorne & Abrams get waivers, then we will open up those 2 scholarships + Mav, Hill, Nunn, Tate for 6 in 2017.

I think we need to try hard to get 2 legit bigs in 2017 (or sooner) for the future, especially if one or more is raw.

If you've argued many times on here, you've already changed your user name. :D;)

But seriously, I'm sure they aren't just offering random guys. I'm betting there are good reasons and a lot of thought behind each offer. There is obviously so much that goes on that we (fan board experts) don't know about.

You don't need to spend many resources to offer a kid, it's not like the staff is making them all priority recruits. Plus there's only so many times you can see a recruit and they should space those visits out. The assistant coaches are always on the road, it would be dumb for them to not offer a kid that has potential to be an Illni. We may have a couple of wings already signed, but staff members always have to prepare for the worst case scenario (someone not signing, qualifying, etc). The staffs knows they needs bigs, it's not like they are avoiding them. They will visit those targets as much as allowed and continue to look for acceptable bigs to offer.

I would really love to see if any poster here applies this same level of contingency planning and worry to his/her actual life.

Like if you are planning for a vacation, do you bring clothes in case the plane is hijacked and lands in Siberia?

I'll be at the Nike Eybl games in Indianpolis this weekend. I will post my thoughts on our targets Sunday night.
