Please tell me you don't actually add an extra syllable and pronounce Illini as Ill-lion-eye.
In the same vein as Tuscaloosa, a giant eye could be a pretty cool mascot if done right.

A banana would be a heckuva mascot. Especially, an orange and blue one.
The Auburn TIGERS fly an Eagle on to the field before games and yell "War Eagle" every chance they get. Even where I work, if a patient comes into the clinic with AU gear on, another AU fan will say "War Eagle" (not "Go Tigers") to them and they reply the same. Just as when one Illini sees another Illini and says "ILL" to get the "INI" response. I don't know much (and don't care) about Auburn's history, but if we fly some eagle or hawk onto the field, we are just copying another Orange and Blue school from the SEC.
This just needs to be left alone OR done in some manner that doesn't make us a huge laughing stock in the sports world... This has potential to be a truly FUBAR situation that could have alumni across the country embarrassed to wear our University of Illinois gear. I hope that these people don't "F" this up...

Why have a sole mascot? Why do what everyone else does? How 'bout a troupe of mascots, doing performance art? Mummenschanz. If they're unwilling, perhaps mimes or alkies doing Monty Python bits?
Chief or Bust. Can't believe people have given in to the fact that they're moving on. No mascot to forever remember the administration's lack of spine and fight.

Let's just be the Fighting Illini. Have a guy dress up in battle gear and rev the folks up a bit. It could be a doughboy, but it could also be modern battle gear.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread - I needed a couple of laughs.
My vote would be for some dude dressed up as a Champagne bottle - he can shoot T-Shirts out the top when we score. The shield can be the label.
