2016 Illini Golf - Road to the Championship

I predict that we end today T9.
Kentucky should go below us, but I think that the rest stay ahead.
Not bad, though, coming back from 15th to T9.
Sunday is moving day for this event.

The back 9 seems to be playing tougher than the front, and most of the teams ahead of us started on the front.

USC's position most of the way through yesterday looked pretty good when considering who was in front of them, and for a team not in the lead, they are as close to being in the driver's seat as a you can be.

Then again... match play is ahead. Gotta love this format.

It's great, and we seem to have a good approach figured out. It really doesn't matter where in stroke play you finish as long as it's in the top 8. You could get the 1 seed in match play but easily draw a red hot top seeded team that just made the cut after struggling the first couple of rounds. Or you could sneak in as a 5-8 and get a lesser team whose momentum is fading after 4 rounds in 4 days.

Illini tee off early tomorrow - 7 AM local time. Paired with Texas and Arizona State, which sets up a really cool pairing of Beau Hossler, Jon Rahm, and Charlie Danielson, the 2, 3 and 4 individual seeds.

+3 now, but they started on the back 9, which has given everyone troubles.

If they stay around +3 going into the front 9, I expect them to finish about even or maybe even under par.

Detry eagles the 4th! Back to +5 and a six-way tie for 9th (4 of those teams haven't teed off yet).

Extremely tight field right now - 15 teams or so within 5 strokes of each other, which is almost nothing with 4 scores added together per team. Two more birdies, and we'd be alone in 6th place with several teams ahead just getting to the back nine.

Par 3's on this course must be a doozie playing from longer distance. Our top 4 again today, +5. That hurts. I don't remember the gals having that much trouble with them.

Back to +7 for the day, +17 overall. It'd be so much nicer to finish the round ahead of the big clump at +15, although in all likelihood a few of those teams will shoot over par today too.

Edit: Charlie birdied the last par 5 of the day to put us back at +6 (+16). Illinois is -17 on par 5s this tournament, which gives you an idea how tough the rest of the course must be!

Lipparelli and Hardy in at +3. Meyer's score will probably be dropped. Would be nice to have a strong finish from our top 2 guys here.

Nice work by Edoardo to post his best round of the tourney today. That could wind up being what lets us play tomorrow.

How are ties resolved? Illini currently tied for 15th place with 2 other teams.

Per the rulebook from a few years back:

Team ties shall be broken by a sudden-death playoff counting the low four scores relative to par on each hole. Play shall continue with new scoring on each successive hole until a winner is determined. The games committee will determine the starting holes. If a playoff involves more than two teams, a shotgun format shall be used.

Very few teams are under par today and a lot of teams just ahead of us have just started their rounds, so it's still very possible we make the cut outright.

I would bet that we would as well, but you never know...
