I'm curious. Why would Sam have sour grades in regards to Nunn? They never played together.

He wouldn't....but uninformed or biased fans might react that way before thinking on it more

Agree that it was rather unprofessional for SM to speak up like this publicly.

It is unprofessional for multiple reasons but how long SM had been on the team or political correctness are not two of them IMO. Nunn was far from a model citizen, and what he did was inexcusable. And paid a hefty price for his actions, with his legal guilty plea, dismissal from the team, personal humiliation, and stigma of his actions.

But SM's statements are totally unprofessional. First, the timing is inappropriate. If you want to say something, say something when things were happening, and when Nunn can defend these accusations. Not when he's down and out, defeated and can no longer defend himself. Given what happened in his legal case, there is no way Nunn can go on local media and defend himself against what SM said. It's the same as people who are afraid of their own shadow but then talk trash when their big brother is around or nobody else is around.

Second, either you give some specifics or otherwise not mention things. Gross generalizations as "addition but subtraction" and "detriment to team chemistry/cohesiveness, etc." can't be defended. What did Nunn do? If you want to say something, come out and specifically say it. Whatever that is. Otherwise, it's like throwing enough mud at the wall, some of it may stick.

Well stated. You made me change my mind on this one.

In fairness to Sam, he is a semi-regular on the radio show. Also, he was asked about Nunn. It's not like he just decided to start talking about it on his own.

I have nothing against Sam, he came to Illinois when we were in desperate need of a pg, never fully healthy & wasn't able to help as much as we would all of liked. But the other choice was an open scholarship & he made the effort.

Nunn is gone, good, bad, or indifferent. Give him props for his time here, no need to throw him under the bus at this point or diminish his time here in any way. Move on, end of story, passing on second hand information like this (true or false, I don't know or care at this point) serves no useful purpose. Doesn't matter who said it, just because someone asks you a question doesn't mean you need to open your mouth and stick your foot in it.

I agree on the first part. On the second, if you are trying to represent Illinois basketball I would be a bit harsher and say keep your mouth shut period. This is over as far as Illinois basketball goes, nothing needs or should be said. Never talk bad about the dead...serves no useful purpose.

I agree on the second point, if you represent Illinois basketball, you are part of the team, part of the family, you address issues within the team and program, no need to go air dirty laundry, especially with generalizations. But I do not think that SM is a representative of Illinois basketball, I assume he talks on shows etc. as an analyst/announcer. So that is more of an independent professional role (not sure if part time or full time). Isn't that what SM does these days? I am really not sure of his exact role and association with the University.

I'm not sure of his role either, I just think as a former member you still keep your mouth shut & back to your original point not now of all times.

On Sam M, I think you don't keep your speaking gig on talk radio if when something Illinois comes along you say "I can't talk about that". That is EXACTLY when they do want to hear from him. I don't know what Sam's goals are, but if this is building into them, then his comments are more easily understood. Doesn't make them classy or desirably, just understandable to me.

Or Sam could get a user name on a fan forum and say whatever he wants.

As far as what was said, did Sam M actually say nunn was a bad teammate? I read into it a little deeper. Nunns presence would have been a distraction. Groce and co also gain a little respect from the guys. Players see accountability and push each other even more so to do the right thing. It's funny watching the conversation go from generalities to rumors to facts so quickly.

From the Way too early Big Ten Basketball projections for 2016-17 (below). We're picked to finish 12th, ahead of Rutgers and Minnesota:

12. Illinois Fighting Illini

"The Fighting Illini are reeling from scandal after scandal. The latest is the dismissal of the one of the top returning players, Kendrick Nunn, after he pleaded guilty to battery charges in a March arrest.

On the court, Illinois will rely on leading scorer, Malcolm Hill, to take control of the offense. Sophomore guard Jalen Coleman-Lands also showed promise in 2015-16 while the forwards consist of Leron Black, Mike Thorne, Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan. The bigs will have to improve defensively and will have to rebound more this season for Illinois to even sniff mid-level status."

Certainly think this is a viable possibility. Does anyone know the context under which the quote was given?

......and Jess Settles of BTN hesitantly projected 9th/10th --- while chatting with Loren Tate last Saturday morning.

I guess I need to temper my expectations!

-----and Sean Harrington says 7th, which probably makes the Dance. Schedule will have a lot to do with it.

Question on Nunn comes at 12:50, short story he talks about culture issues after talking about legal issues and makes comment it hurts from basketball perspective, helps from culture/comradarie perspective.

I honestly didn't think that his comments were offensive at all. At least twice he complemented Nunn as a player and a leader and said that his departure would hurt the team from a basketball standpoint. The "addition by subtraction" comment came at the end of his long statement about culture. I think it was more of a let's move forward away from the distractions kind of comment more than anything else.

I wonder how many people actually listened to the SM interview... He said this allows everyone to focus on basketball activities and rebuild the culture that all of us would agree had been lacking. It wasn't so much about Nunn being a bad kid but more so about this being a wake up call to the team and a chance to grow closer and focus on basketball

So, as is the norm, things got twisted, embellished, and completely blown out of proportion with Maniscalco's comments.

Since it's a Friday, what are people predicting the Illini finish this year? I'm going to go with 6th. Here is my prediction for the year.

1.) Michigan State
2.) Indiana
3.) Purdue
4.) Maryland
5.) Wisconsin
6.) Illinois
7.) Michigan
8.) Ohio State
9.) Iowa
10.) Nebraska
11.) Northwestern
12.) Penn State
13.) Minnesota
14.) Rutgers

  • Michigan State/Indiana will battle it out for Top 2.
  • Purdue will be tough with Swanigan coming back and Spike improving point-guard play.
  • Maryland will be tough with Carter and Melo coming back.
  • I see us battling with Michigan and Wisconsin for 5/6/7. Could go either way depending on schedule, home match-ups, and team development.
  • Ohio State had everyone young transfer, and the 3 best returning players are solid but not All-B10.
  • Iowa had everyone graduate besides Jok, and I don't really know how good their younger guys are going to be.
  • I think Nebraska will surprise people this year (Andrew White, Watson, Morrow, Webster), but they have been horrible on the road.
  • Can't put faith in Northwestern, Penn State,.
  • Minnesota/Rutgers are train-wrecks.
Orange Kool-Aid has been chugged for the day... :D:illinois:

But you get to see NW as well...stubhub, craigslist, just show up and you will do better.

I sat 30 rows up/50 yard line at UNC football game for ~ $50/ticket last year in the Carolina Blue Blood section, bought the tickets off craigslist from Greensboro country club area.

The caveat may be that there aren't a bunch of pre-sold season ticket holders out there, maybe all the extra tickets are stuck in the box office for something like this?
