I'm curious. Why would Sam have sour grades in regards to Nunn? They never played together.
He wouldn't....but uninformed or biased fans might react that way before thinking on it more

Agree that it was rather unprofessional for SM to speak up like this publicly.
It is unprofessional for multiple reasons but how long SM had been on the team or political correctness are not two of them IMO. Nunn was far from a model citizen, and what he did was inexcusable. And paid a hefty price for his actions, with his legal guilty plea, dismissal from the team, personal humiliation, and stigma of his actions.
But SM's statements are totally unprofessional. First, the timing is inappropriate. If you want to say something, say something when things were happening, and when Nunn can defend these accusations. Not when he's down and out, defeated and can no longer defend himself. Given what happened in his legal case, there is no way Nunn can go on local media and defend himself against what SM said. It's the same as people who are afraid of their own shadow but then talk trash when their big brother is around or nobody else is around.
Second, either you give some specifics or otherwise not mention things. Gross generalizations as "addition but subtraction" and "detriment to team chemistry/cohesiveness, etc." can't be defended. What did Nunn do? If you want to say something, come out and specifically say it. Whatever that is. Otherwise, it's like throwing enough mud at the wall, some of it may stick.
In fairness to Sam, he is a semi-regular on the radio show. Also, he was asked about Nunn. It's not like he just decided to start talking about it on his own.

I agree on the first part. On the second, if you are trying to represent Illinois basketball I would be a bit harsher and say keep your mouth shut period. This is over as far as Illinois basketball goes, nothing needs or should be said. Never talk bad about the dead...serves no useful purpose.
I agree on the second point, if you represent Illinois basketball, you are part of the team, part of the family, you address issues within the team and program, no need to go air dirty laundry, especially with generalizations. But I do not think that SM is a representative of Illinois basketball, I assume he talks on shows etc. as an analyst/announcer. So that is more of an independent professional role (not sure if part time or full time). Isn't that what SM does these days? I am really not sure of his exact role and association with the University.
Or Sam could get a user name on a fan forum and say whatever he wants.
As far as what was said, did Sam M actually say nunn was a bad teammate? I read into it a little deeper. Nunns presence would have been a distraction. Groce and co also gain a little respect from the guys. Players see accountability and push each other even more so to do the right thing. It's funny watching the conversation go from generalities to rumors to facts so quickly.

Question on Nunn comes at 12:50, short story he talks about culture issues after talking about legal issues and makes comment it hurts from basketball perspective, helps from culture/comradarie perspective.
I was going to buy a couple of tickets to the doubleheader game at the UC but I am reconsidering after seeing the pricing.
Lower Level Sideline $155.00
Lower Level Corner Court $130.00
Lower Level End Court $105.00
Upper Level Sideline $55.00
Upper Level Corner Court $45.00
From the Way too early Big Ten Basketball projections for 2016-17 (below). We're picked to finish 12th, ahead of Rutgers and Minnesota:
12. Illinois Fighting Illini
"The Fighting Illini are reeling from scandal after scandal. The latest is the dismissal of the one of the top returning players, Kendrick Nunn, after he pleaded guilty to battery charges in a March arrest.
On the court, Illinois will rely on leading scorer, Malcolm Hill, to take control of the offense. Sophomore guard Jalen Coleman-Lands also showed promise in 2015-16 while the forwards consist of Leron Black, Mike Thorne, Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan. The bigs will have to improve defensively and will have to rebound more this season for Illinois to even sniff mid-level status."
......and Jess Settles of BTN hesitantly projected 9th/10th --- while chatting with Loren Tate last Saturday morning.
I guess I need to temper my expectations!
-----and Sean Harrington says 7th, which probably makes the Dance. Schedule will have a lot to do with it.
