Goodwin sat the entire overtime. Anyone know why? He was dominating for a long stretch and then Ayton just started erasing every drive and scoring at will. Eagles lost 92-88 in OT. Garland and Finke both looked excellent. Goodwin was terrific for most of the game, but once again struggled to finish against a team with a legit rim protector. And sitting out OT was weird. Cramps maybe?

I'm assuming he fouled out with 5 seconds left in regulation. He went to the rack, missed the contested shot, then fouled because time was running out. He exited the game on that play and never came back. I definitely wouldn't think cramps would keep him out of overtime. They really missed him in OT.

Makes sense. Yeah, they needed him at the end. Tough loss for the Eagles.

Goodwin showed a more diverse game offensively in this one. He had a gorgeous behind-the-back dribble into a step-back three at one point and a buttery turnaround fadeaway from 16 feet that looked positively Malcolm-esque.

Mike (therevelator), did you watch most of the Meanstreets game? If so, how did Eastern and Verge look? Anyone else stand out?

Verge and Gilyard both had good games. Eastern and Bowen not near as good as this afternoon. Don't know the stats yet but it was typical MS -- fast, ragged and fun.

Has Tim Finke stopped growing, then? He's what, 6'6"?

Goodwin: 21 pts, 8 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl; 9-20 from the field. I saw him hit what appeared to be a step-back 3, but I guess they called it a 2. So far, Goodwin is averaging 22.7 pts, 10.7 reb, 2 ast, 2.3 stl.

Finke: 23 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 4/5 from 3. Unless he falls apart tomorrow, this game will probably guarantee that he stays in the top-50 going into the season. I like Finke's game a lot and hope he stays in Champaign for college.

Garland: 13 pts, 2 reb, 5 ast, 2 stl. Really impressive PG. Awesome outside shooter and ball handler, very quick, mature floor game. Between him, Dosunmu, and Ramey, we have a shot at three different top 50-ish lead guards in 2018. I'm sure the scholarship situation will work itself out if Finke and one of these three decide to commit.

DeAndre Ayton: Obviously we have no shot with the #1 player in the 2017 class, but he's really dang good. He had 24 points, 13 boards, and 3 blocks, but that doesn't begin to describe how he took over in the last ten minutes. He altered every shot down the stretch. Goodwin had been abusing Cal Supreme all game, but when Ayton turned it on J-Good was forced to take bad angles. The last few layups he attempted were uncharacteristically timid and hesitant. Ayton controlled the whole game and it seemed like he barely broke a sweat.

You overestimate college coaches' ability to find players outside of summer ball.

You severally underestimate how much smaller the world is in today's day and age. If the same blue bloods have been finding talent all over the country since the 50's and 60's, well before summer ball and social media, I'm pretty sure they can identify prospects who are relatively speaking a "little off the radar."

It is astounding how productive Goodwin is despite some very clear areas for improvement(shooting, not stellar athlete). I'm actually happy this kid has some identifiable weaknesses. If there was ever a prospect who can turn a weakness to a strength, it's Goodwin. That boy is going to will himself into becoming a plus shooter. Put him in a strength&conditioning program and he will negate length. He will be an absolute handful attacking off the dribble in a couple years. He's too much of a bull and he plays with too much fire to fall short.
Hard to teach heart, passion and work ethic....he seems to be A+ in those categories.

How much of these are evaluations and how much just to be seen? I haven't watched a lot of these but it seems like a lot of these coaches are barely interested in these games let alone taking notes.

I have to give it to Groce as one of the hardest working recruiters out there. However things work out for him, he definitely gave it his all on the recruiting front. Tireless, persistent, and aggressive...it seems like he has altered his strategy a bit. Away from proven 5 stars to 4 stars that are undervalued or true 4 stars. I think he realizes that he only has a finite amount of time/energy and that they should be spent making sure he has a good base to work from and then be able to swing for the fences on one or two of them in the future. I hope he is successful with Jordan Goodwin...seems like a great catch that we could really use. Go get 'em JG!

Dreams

I dont remember many of my dreams, and I rarely dream about Illini basketball anymore. A nightmare here and there.

Last night though I dreamt that Tilmon signed his LOI with us. It was awesome.

On the other hand, two nights ago I dreamt that my beard had suddenly disappeared, but it is still there.

On the other other hand, in the beard dream, it was a Wednesday, so it could be next week.

For those watching the Eagles game, Marvin Bagley, the number 1 rated 2018 prospect, is number 35 in red. Eagles go from Ayton, number 1 rated 2017 prospect to Bagley, number 1 2018 in back-to-back games. Eagles up by 1 early.

Has it been announced that Tilmon is going to go back to Belleville Althoff for his senior year?

By 'properly evaluated', I mean a recruit has been seen by a lot of coaches and they have decided whether or not to offer him.

I think we're talking past each other. I'm talking about whether or not Trent Frazier's offer list matters right now, and, more generally, how easy it is for recruits to fly under the radar. My bottom line argument is that his offer list doesn't mean much right now because he probably hasn't been seen by very many staffs. After this month, his offer list will be a much better indicator of the caliber of recruit he is.

That's all I'm talking about.

You are correct. My comments had very little to do with Frazier.

West Palm Beach is far away from everywhere, in a state that is more about football. Contrast that to Chicago, where basketball is king and everyone's always hyping up players and every blue blood and midwestern team recruits.

It's not the same level of exposure.

As for Frazier this summer, he's playing at the Orlando Summer Classic with Florida Elite.

Lou found Derek Harper in West Palm.:)

 Far away from everywhere??

Palm Beach County has 1.4 million people.
Just north of Broward County which has almost 2 million people.
Two of the larger counties in the US.

Peoria County has 186,000 by the way.

The kid is not some hidden diamond in the rough find in the swamps of Florida who learned how to play while chasing off gators and nobody has seen.

He quit his EYBL team allegedly as he was not playing much so if he is not get the exposure and offers that are commensurate with his possible talent level- that might be on him.
Not sure the level of the Orlando Classic 17U teams or his team.

I don't know if any staff are heading down there to watch him or any other D1 prospects, but it is not that far from the Peach Jam.

He needs to be out there playing against some other high D1 prospects.
If he can compete at that level- by all means he might be able to help here and his ranking will start to sort out as more Top 100 vs out of Top 150.

And yes- rankings do matter.
I will take my chances with 5 Top 50-100 guys versus 5 Top 125-200 guys any day.

Yep. I'm sure that's been mentioned somewhere along the line by Groce and staff, too (they know their history).

Boy, if we could land Tilmon, Goodwin, and one more good player in '17 at a position of need (preferably another BIG), and then get either Dosunmo (probably dreaming) or Finke (more likely) in '18, that will be a great core going forward for the next few years. Illinois basketball would be back! I think with what we have and those guys we'd have a team reminiscent of some of Matta's best teams when Groce was an assistant there. I could at least see a few Sweet 16s or Elite Eights in our future with that group. Maybe even better. Just need one of those guys to get the ball rolling... :shield:
