It's been mentioned quite a bit today. Also been compared to Quinn Buckner.

Goodwin is a better player than Sergio, IMO. Better range on his jump shot, more athletic.

I know. Sacrilege. :). Sergio had intangibles and was a good defender but never averaged more than 9 a game at Illinois. Goodwin has a higher upside, IMO.

I must have missed the comparisons but the rest seems in line. Most players today have better range and are more athletic then the were (gulp) almost 20 years ago.

Bottom line, I would take 4 years of Sergio right now if that's what Goodwin could provide and I wouldn't look back.

I think Serg had that intangible quality like goodwin. a straight up winner.

With all due respect to Sergio, Goodwin will be a far better college player than Sergio was.

I think he just joined them for this tourney. He probably saw on IL that he has not played against any competition and joined up for this weekend.:)
I saw a tweet on it about 2 hours ago. I saw it on this link.

He played with them last weekend at the Orlando Summer classic.
They had three blowouts by 30-50 points in pool play, then got knocked out in bracket play.
Have no idea how he did.

Need to see him vs some top competition.

Dave Wischnowski wants nothing more than for Groce to get 0 credit for anything successful. He is jonesin' harder that anybody I've seen to see Illinois have a terrible season so that Groce can be fired. Controls his entire narrative. His 'sources' are always very accurate since they always seem to chime in after the breaking news...
This isn't true....
Alex Roux already on it with a great article:

Can't wait to see Robert's LLIUOI tomorrow.

Going to be interesting what happens with the final 2-3 spots. I think Goodwin will be one of those spots. It appears another spot is heading to a PG and another one to a big. I don't think we get Scruggs, too similiar of a player to Damonte although Scruggs appears to have a higher motor and further ahead. The big I believe will go to Theo John or that other PF. I don't think we have room for Justin Smith (already have Pickett) or Eastern (Unless he truely can play the PG spot).

no i think the narrative has changed dramatically. get on board or risk being left behind.

On the contrary. Getting Tilmon/Goodwin improves the chances that you don't pass up on them given the opportunity. We will have JCL/Picket/Goodwin/Kipper/Jordan/DJW all at wing, and Williams is really a combo, so players like Lewis or Eastern will likely not end up at Illinois. That leaves PG and PF/C. We will not pass on players like Uyaelunmo, John, etc. Actually, higher chances that they pass on us than us passing on them.

We may not land Scruggs, but it won't be because he's too similar of a player as Damonte. If Scruggs is coming, best believe he's coming for the keys.

so what happens with the ships then if they pass?? we can't just leave two open spots?

2017 Roster
1 - TJL
1/2 - DMW
2 - JCL
2/3 - Jordan, Pickett
3 - DJW
3/4 - Nichols
4 - Black
4/5 - Finke
5 - Tilmon

This roster then carries over 100% intact to 2018 unless we lose players to transfer or the NBA.

Supposing we add Goodwin, I'm in agreement with those who think we're then pretty packed at the wings and would want to focus on adding another true PG and a true PF/C.

Who said we will leave two open spots? Groce will try to sign a PG (nothing to do with the players mentioned) and another big, PF/C type, via transfer, 5th year, or other HS player. But we are not going to pass on an opportunity for players like Uyaelunmo or John if they want to come.

Goodwin says I'm in and then the all out push for Scruggs. If Frazier takes his OV, that die is cast. Last ride to Kiir, Smith, U or John. Boom!

I agree, getting Scruggs will be a HR, highest ranked at his position. Just that Scruggs is/was a more difficult case to begin with, more difficult than Tilmon/Goodwin.

Wasn't that the Wellington Wolves, a park district team, that he played with last weekend in Orlando. Basically that Orlando Summer Showcase is a glorified HS tourney. The BOTS tourney that starts Thursday in Suwanee is a certified AAU event and for the first team Frazier will be playing for the Florida Elite, an Adidias sponsored team out of Tampa.

Hold on there. There's a huge difference between holding someone accountable and being a hater. It's important to note the difference, because even though this is something to celebrate, the on court results HAVE to be there.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Of course recruiting victories mean diddly if it doesn't translate into wins, but Wischnowsky takes his anti-Groce feelings to another level. I can respect his opinion, but I can also recognize that it will color the rest of his commentary as well. For instance, we get a commit from Tilmon, a 5-star recruit at a position of need, and one of his first thoughts is to talk about "his sources" saying that he committed to the school, not the coach. That was obviously an implication that he's still rooting for a Groce firing (particularly obvious given his tweets a few days ago about Billy Donovan or Fred Hoiberg coming to Illinois).

Again, I definitely understand having a put-up-or-shut-up mentality with Groce at this point, but Wischnowsky seems to be completely off the boat and discounting any way for Groce to right the ship. Probably some success this season would go a long way toward making him a little more optimistic.

I would be shocked if Pickett doesn't redshirt.

Well, let's hope the coach plays him and he passes the audition. I'm not a blind faith Groce guy, but I trust his assessment skills. Am inclined to believe Frazier is a player. That said, it will be great to see how the kid fares against stiff competition.

I have not seen Frazier play but he will not be a bad pick up. I know just one coach who has watched him play and he had positive things to say. Unless you can close on Scruggs, who I imagine the staff will pursue (but unlikely to close), picking up a PG is still a priority and Frazier does not need to be a star, just solid. Assuming Goodwin also joins, Tilmon/Goodwin take a lot of pressure off and allow Groce the option to pursue some good (but not top) players at PG and PF/C to complete this class.

:thumb: The Best Of the South event last year is where the staff uncovered Frazier. Although not at the level of the Nike EYBL events it still brings some good competition. It's Adidas sponsored. 2015 BOTS was also a showcase for Nick Ward (MSU) and Ibi Watson (UM). There will be 300+ Div1 coaches and plenty of national evaluators.

I'm sure we will see the OVs set up to where Scruggs will be the weekend before Frazier to give him tha opportunity to commit first. Like Brunson then Evans.
Frazier can ball though it's not like he is some slouch. Would be very happy to land him.

Agree to disagree on Wishnowski... Based my opinion off of about 8-months of his Twitter responses to all things negative or positive re: Illinois basketball. Not that he wants the program to fail, he has openly said that he doesn't think it can possibly do so under Groce and I think he's almost frustrated by things like Abrams and Thorne coming back giving them a good chance at a really good year.

Thanks for sharing the article, tho... Good stuff!

Combes isn't saying that. He is just saying we need a PG another PG cause TJL will be the only true PG on the team after next year.

To me, you need to get a PG every year. It's like QB in football, you need to recruit one every single year cause you can never have enough ball handlers.

Absolutely. And if you balance classes correct, you take at least one true big man every year also.

As we all know it doesn't always work out that way :)
