#500 in football equates to around #114 in the rankings in basketball, which isn't bad at all (Trent Frazier is around there in RSCI).

The rule of thumb I find useful is take the football ranking and divide by 4.4 (# of starters on a football team versus number of starters on a basketball team, or 22/5=4.4).

So yeah, a player ranked around 500 is very good for us in football recruiting, especially given our recent history and previously downtrodden state of our football program. Definitely hope we get Carney (and Green and O O)! :thumb:

I like that a bit better as it tempers expectations. I've always used 6.54 (85/13).. football scholarships/basketball scholarships.

I also agree with offer lists though. They are the most telling, particularly in football where the responsibilities of each player are very different and the shear amount of prospects is staggering.

Yes. Offer lists are the best and can either corroborate the ranking or make you question it. If a kid is ranked lower but has fairly recent offers from powerhouse schools then I either suspect he's underrated by the rankings or they haven't had a chance to evaluate (or need to update). If a kid is rated more highly but only has offers from some middling local schools then I either assume he hasn't had much exposure to college recruiters yet or that the rating is optimistic. The ranking plus the offers help shape the whole story.

Pipe dream for the d-line class is having Owen Carney, Olalere Oladipo, Alec Jackson, Boe Tufele, and maybe 1-2 more guys.

It seems like Tufele is not a highly, or even mediocrely, recruited player. Why is that?

The film doesn't jump off the screen at me. A pretty chubby, slow kid without the prototypical frame for the position. He plays with pretty good pad level though and that could make him pretty strong and tough to dislodge in a few years. Maybe they like the way he can stand his ground in the hole and occupy blockers on run downs. Dusty Dvoracek was always meant to be that guy during Lovie's years with the Bears but it never panned out.

The staff obviously sees something they like and we need players there.

only thing I see in these clips is he needs to work on his first move being forward rather then standing up, if you watch 85% of the time his head comes up first. That can be fixed and he moves well for his size

I agree. His tape isn't phenomenal, but his size and skill set is good. I see him as a low three star recruit, and a worthy project to take on. If they teach him not to pop up and get him to cut down his body fat a bit he could be a monster as an upperclassman.

I agree I would take him in a heart beat by his rs soph or jr year he could be a monster

If we can get both commits tomorrow, it'll be kind of surreal considering where we were 2 weeks ago.

ASSUMING Illinois secures both of their commitments:

Team Recruiting Ranking Projected Changes (Rivals):

Overall: From 70th to 55th

Big Ten: From 13th to 11th

*There are a decent amount of schools ahead of Illinois simply due to volume recruiting (Northwestern already has 18 recruits of various star rankings) that will normalize over time.

Ahmir Mitchell transferring from scUM.

Mitchell was a 4 star WR out of NJ who was an early enrolled for the Wolverines. He was ranked #139 in the country by rivals. Michigan articles said that Mitchell impressed in camp this year and looked to see playing time as a true freshman. Mitchell was suspended 10 days or so ago and rumors on a free Michigan board "heard" that he failed a drug test for marijuana. Mitchell took to Twitter today to announce that he is opening up his recruitment and transferring from UM. Anyways, obvious character questions and concerns but huge talent. I'm a believer in second chances but does the staff? I would guess no but do you guys think they'd at least gauge his interest?

It's my birthday tomorrow so let the commitment train be my present!

Tomorrow would have been my Dad's 101st birthday. He was alive to see Zuppke's National Championships. God-willing, I will be around to see Lovie's.
