With the incompetence of the previous staff and recruiting misses, this roster has talent and speed. Lovie will recruit even better, I wouldn't be surprised if a big name switches to Illinois. One thing Illnois has done over the last 10 years is send high quality D-line to the pros.

We have a little bit of talent and speed. We don't have depth of talent and speed.

Cameron and Kamryn appear to be teammates at Christian Brothers College High School.

after watching Watkins I like him a ton. Edwards and Brown both look to have speed and I could see Lovie turning one or both into DBs depending on who all else we get at WR/DB spots. Bonner looks ok I wouldn't mind at all if we got him. ! just wish they showed 40 times on these guys. I also Really liked Eleby for a soph looked pretty under control and a nice arm. I wouldn't be at all shocked to get 3 or 4 commits after this weekend even more likely if we can win I would guess

Not complete, but a list of recruits attending this Saturday's game from random sources:

2017
Howard Watkins - 3* Guard (maybe DL?)
DJ Edwards - 3* WR
Ra'Von Bonner - 3* RB
Cameron Brown - 3* WR
Diego Fagot - 3* LB
Caylon May - 2* DT

2018
Kamryn Babb - 4* WR (#78 Nationally)
Kaleb Eleby - 3* QB
**I'm assuming this will be a big weekend for '18 guys, so other names will likely come out as the week progresses.

Checked out a few profiles. Recruiting is tough to figure out. RB Bonner has no major offers but the relationship with OSU seems deep - with two named recruiters. Diego Fagot meanwhile (tough name - gotta be a tough kid) has a huge list of mediocre offers. How does a kid rack up offers like that from almost all mid-majors? Coaches son? Straight As?

Someone touched on Zaire earlier. Saw on Twitter that his family has recently commented that he will be on pace to do a grad school transfer in the Spring after he graduates this fall.

That was me. Just feel like he would be a great 5th year option for us

It makes a lot of sense.

He won't do much better than us and we won't do much better than him.

Would he be eligible for a 6th year because of his injury last year or can he not get it due to the voluntary redshirt his first year? I was never clear on that rule.

I do not know with 100% certainty, but I would think that he doesn't get an extra 6th year. Having him as a patch for one year would be very nice. He could be quite good with the young WRs coming in and hopefully Mikey Dudek in his arsenal.

Then you get an '18 stud that can come in and be ready to play as a true FR.

I believe you are correct in that the voluntary redshirt disqualifies him.

Smith said a player must be granted two medical hardships to qualify. That means two seasons ended by injury, and the player in question must be injured in the first half of the season and not participate in more than 30% of the season or three games, whichever is greater.

I'm sure there are exceptions to the above, but that seems to be the primary criteria in order to qualify for a sixth year of eligibility.

Jon Beutjer was granted a sixth year due to extenuating circumstances surrounding his transfer from Iowa:

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/bigten/2004-01-24-illinois-beutjer_x.htm

Beutjer, who started seven games last season before being sidelined by a back injury, had asked for the extra year before last season started because of the circumstances surrounding his transfer from Iowa in 2001.

Beutjer began his college career with the Hawkeyes in 1999, but left the school after sustaining a concussion during a fight with his teammate and roommate over payment of a cable television bill. Beutjer said he was disappointed with how Iowa coaches handled the situation.

I don't want to pilfer premium content, but Werner's Twitter teased a premium article that the title states a 2017 top 100 recruit will be in town this weekend. I assume he's talking about football and not Kris Wilkes.

Any idea who he may be talking about? I would have to think it is Jeff Thomas as I do not know of any other 2017 top 100 targets that we are in on.
