Very glad to hear this.

That we're spending all this money and the locker rooms aren't going to be fall-down extraordinary still kinda sticks in my craw, but we're at least upgrading to industry standard, so I'll live with it.

Where's Phil Knight when you need him?

There was more than enough money to give proper focus to the amenities for the players. What has been done is disproportionately a hand-to-mouth transfer from the Loyalty Circle honchos who provided the bulk of the funding back to themselves. This project was originally conceived by Ron Guenther, remember, and the attitude, uniquely severe in us among major schools, that athletics capital projects are first and foremost playthings for those that fund them is baked into the walls over at Bielfeldt and disentangling that legacy is not as simple as an AD or coaching hire.

(Told you I had a white-hot take)

Agree that the locker rooms are underwhelming, but whatever.

LOOOOOVE the prominent courtside Orange Krush visible for the cameras. Whoever decided to do that should be given a raise.

I'll wait until they are done to decide. I really don't know what the final product is supposed to look like, I gave up on the renderings.

Looks like they are getting out the old scoreboard. Wonder what that is all about.

Its just hanging out until the new one arrives, they want to make sure the new one works etc. But it will be gone later.

The locker rooms could have been bigger, but the coaches both agreed that they would like a commons area outside of the locker rooms. The locker room will be just for dressing and showering etc.

Yeah, and since these are only game day facilities, I'm ok with it. When they build the new basketball practice facility (I imagine maybe 5-10 years), then those locker rooms and player amenities have to be top notch.

Ditto.

But, I fear when that day comes there will still be some complaining even if they are top notch. ;)

On your visits ilphotog, can you tell if they have made any modifications to the area where the band is located? From the few live games last year and even on TV, this area was well under-utilized and looked haphazard. I would like to see some actual risers and not just some pushed back seats.

Looked very temporary and poorly thought out IMO.

Good question, I'll check next visit.

Today's visit - A few nice things today.
1. The new scoreboard has arrived,(not put together) and folks it will be massive! The old one was sitting on one side of the arena, and the new one close by. At first I was well it looks about the same size maybe a little wider. Then a guy say's, that part your looking at, it's a little bigger than the old one. That's just the top half of the video board. So the new board will be nearly twice as tall and a little wider. The old top part that was metal and showed the score, will now be a completely LED board on all four sides.
2. The ribbon board is complete.
3. The Hall of Fame room is looking spectacular. More artistic lighting has been installed, displays are being filled in with items. Photo's are being installed, and there will be a huge video wall, maybe 5' x 15' (est). Plus they have seats from Kenny, Huff and the SFC. Also the entrance to the HOF from the West Lobby looks really sharp as well.
4. The Locker rooms didn't change much, cleaned up the area and some painting has begun. The common area has risers being built and chairs will be installed. This area will be where the coaches talk to the players instead of the locker rooms.

Everything else is just moving along on schedule.
? about the band area couldn't be asked today, will try again on the next trip. Sub tour guide today.

The common area is a name we made up, not sure what the room is called officially. Previously you had a rectangle Mens locker room, then a rectangle trainers room and finally a rectangle women's locker room. All three of these were in a line and both had doors to the training room.
Now the locker rooms are both round and in their same spots. The trainers room has been moved down and across the hallway. In its place is what I am calling a common area. Its thought that the players will meet in this area for coaches pregame, halftime talks instead of the locker room. There will be several chairs, risers are being built so the room will have a slight stadium seating like area. I would guess that this room would be more comfortable to relax in before the game than the locker room. We will know more soon.

Sounds pretty similar to what I've noticed other arenas having on game telecasts. The pregame and halftime talks that they always show are almost always in a separate room with chairs and a whiteboard. There are rarely lockers in these areas

How is the away locker room? Did they make it smaller, shorter, and give it a soothing color that will make it tough for guys to get fired up? Maybe yellow? Also, is there a tv constantly playing Bob Ross' The Joy of Painting? I can't help but fall asleep watching that guy.

Let's make it happen!

Aww, I love Bob Ross, and the "happy little trees" he painted. Seriously, the guy was pretty good.

"Flying Illini"
"2005 Team"

Seriously? We have had 11 years and we can't come up with anything better than "2005 Team"? Not sure if it was the university, the fans, the media, or the contracted branding firm, Infinite Scale, but someone dropped the ball here.

Sidebar - the HOF does look slick though. Long overdue.

Those teams before the 2005 team earned their moniker while they were at Illinois. There wasn't a good name that stuck around for the 2005 team so it'd be quite lame to just come up with a name after their reign.

Agree with both. Despite not having a nickname think they could've done something like "March to the Arch" or something.
