Keon Johnson 3 for 13 in 38 minutes. Had he shot like that against us, we'd have won by 30!

He shot like he did against us because our defense is terrible. I suspect he was 3 for 13 in this game because when he drove his 5 foot 6 frame into the lane, they either stopped him or rejected his shots. In fact, only 4 of 13 shots were inside the arc. Against us, 14 of his 21 were inside the arc and he made 11 of those. It isn't rocket science, when allow guys to shoot layups and short jumpers, there shooting percentage goes up. It is not coincidence or simply bad luck that guys from other teams routinely have their best offensive games against us.

I don't want to defend our defense, but Keon Johnson was conference player of the year last year and our defense is far from the first to see him go off for 30+ points. He was making circus shots at the end when he was barely able to walk!

Yeah he threw up a couple of three pointers steph wouldn't hit with consistency. Not to mention another few layups and pullups that were lucky to hit in the general direction of the basket let alone go in. We got unlucky, but we also lost the game on offense too--poor shot selection and terrible passing.

I was kind of curious so watched part of this game. I was wondering if NH played a box and one or denied/doubled him the ball, but it looked to me like they just played him straight up and he just missed shots. Also the Cooks kid put up 30 points, so they may have just tried to get the hot hand the ball. You can watch here if you want.

+1 to ChiefIllini. The Illinois offense, especially at the end, was worse than timid. Keon's impossible shots at the end would have been for naught had we at least attempted a few possible shots.

I think you missed the main point, which was that we allowed him to get in the lane for easier shots. If all we had allowed were 3 point attempts, he would not have hurt us either. Our on the ball defending and interior defense are virtually non-existent.

Yeah, I don't disagree and wasn't really trying to counter that point. I actually thought Tate did a reasonable job but when Johnson did get by him he got no help from his teammates.

I didn't see NH do anything significantly different than what we could have done.

The difference is that Keon was cold against NH and hot against us. I doubt that NH defends much better than we do.

BTW, mighty Winthrop lost to New Hampshire at home last night - 65-60. More fuel for the fire...

On the flip Winthrop has their "signature win" this year by beating B1G Illinois:thumb:

How about that UK backcourt. I really believe that Ullis wouldn't have started this year of him and Murray came back. That's how good Fox and Monk are.

That same NH team also beat Temple this year, and lost 100-41 to West Virginia . . .

Yeah, my wife is a UNH alum and I "attended" there one year, so we follow our tiny little school with a great hockey tradition.

Really the only extreme outlier is Temple's performance last week coming back to beat WV (and FSU). How on earth do they do that when WV has beaten the pants off everyone else and Temple lost to New Hampshire by 5 earlier this year.
