Illinois 88, NC State 74 POSTGAME

I've had this discussion a few times and my contention is the committee doesn't have the time to go this in depth for every situation. They'd certainly take it under consideration when looking at NC St's resume, but not sure it would impact ours. But if we're on the bubble and it's down to those last few teams, then I could see them digging deep enough to figure it out.

I know the ESPN BPI formula tries to account for injured players, but it's the only rating system that does.

I'm sure you're right. That would be incredibly complicated and at a certain point I feel like you have to ignore certain subjective factors. The committee has made some questionable decisions in the past so I've always been curious about their decision making. One thing that I do like is that it seems like they value good wins much more than bad losses.

Did a great job feeding our bigs tonight. Thorne, Morgan quietly played very well tonight. Black might be our second best player and has played fantastic since his return. If Lucas can mature more and erase a few of his bone-headed plays, Tate sees 5-10 minutes tops and Nichols is a reliable option off the bench then we could really have a good year. The two games against IUPUI and Central Michigan will be good games to make some fixes and see what KN is all about. ILL

I will say it - the first half was painful!

sure glad we saw a different team in the second half.

That was a terrific game by TA, Malcolm and Leron. Thought that TJL was also very good and it is encouraging to see him coming along so quickly with the limited practice time he's had. Thorne, Mav and Finke were more journeymen tonight overall, LB stole the big man limelight. So encouraging, both the play and the better substitution patterns in the 2nd half. Way to go !

Losing Hill, Thorn, and Morgan and only adding 1 forward won't hurt his playing chances though

(well, nothing really can, given that he is only getting 3min/game lately)

But Thorne and Morgan are the only guys who theoretically should be battling with DJW for PT; so you lose 2 of them, add Tilmon and Kipper, then you're back to square one.

What's the deal with Aaron Jordan? He has become a non-factor. I don't sense that Groce trusts him on the court AT ALL. Seems like a hard worker, but I have to think he may be wearing colors other than orange and blue next year.

Please don't go there. He will be a Junior next year, and we have seen countless times when a player gets his chance as an upper classman and shines.
Let's all hope for that and not start pushing anyone into a different uniform

Beating a dead horse here but DJ, a small forward, is getting less play time because our best player, Hill, is playing his natural position for once. There will be time at the 3 next year. Hope he sticks around.

He is what he is. If that pretty stroke can contribute to 3 3's a night then that's a 9 point swing.

Which right now is Jamar Smith, which isn't the worst thing. However, he has the ability to attack the basket with athleticism which jamar couldn't do, so I would like to see him expand his game.

Kipper is going to need a chance to see what he can do. Going to need an option to give Hill a break, can't play 35 mpg. Also need an option to go smaller (Abrams, Hill, Kipper, DJ, Black).

Might not be his choice.

Given his mom's comments and his unexplained lack of PT, DJW has Myke Henry written all over him. Slim-to-no chance he stays around for next year, especially given the addition of Tilmon to that front line.

Way too premature. The main reason DJW and AJ aren't playing is because Hill is in front of them and JCL and Abrams are in front of them at the 2. Abrams and Hill both leave which frees up 65+ min next year.

I would like to see Hill and DJW together at the 2/3, but right now Groce likes the combo of Abrams and JCL at the 2 and you really can't argue about that.

The age of the B1G banger down low is all but gone, so really DJW should (given his length and athletic ability) currently share time at the 4 behind Black. But Groce's insistence on playing Tracy at the 2 in some kind of far-fetched 2-pg system shifts the entire lineup.

We can, and should, pull a page from Izzo's book and play a 2-forward (i.e. Hill/DJW, Hill/Black) system.

Leron was so fired up throughout the game that he could have stayed in the whole game and probably wouldn't have let up a bit.

I'm glad for the win tonight. It cools Groce's seat ever so slightly. He needs to basically win out the non-con to get back on track though. This season is good either way for me. My desire for Groce to succeed is there so if we win, AWESOME. However, if he doesn't and is fired, it will be on to a new adventure.

Agree, however Groce doesn't seem to have trust in Williams yet and we have yet to see Nichols. That lineup would be versatile and able to run but rebounding would be an issue even with Black.

A nice and much needed win. Hoping the team continues to get better and gel. It was great to see that we were the team that made the correct adjustments at halftime. As others have indicated, substitutions were much better.

Leron's "fire" during the and1 play was refreshing to see. If that continues and others can buy into that it will only make this team better. He and Tracy can really be leaders with that and help to build that identity.

Time to see if we can bring this same all around play and coaching effort to the VCU game. It would be a good start to bigger things.

Not a big contribution but it is nice to see JCL go 3-5 from 3. Need him to shoot well to balance out this offense.

If JCL just does a catch and shoot he is deadly. When he catches and takes even one dribble before shooting he is much less accurate.

I can. Tracy isn't a 2. He hit a few 3-pointers against cupcakes, and now people seemingly forget how extraordinarily-mediocre of a shooter he is.

He sat out the last 2 years with injuries to where the only basketball stuff he could do was work on his shot. Get the old Tracy out of your head. This is a completely different player.

Or maybe he has improved his shooting in his 2 year hiatus? If he starts to go ice cold then things might change.

Plus the biggest thing is Abrams is a better defender.
