I hope something happens soon. It's sure hard to be an Illini fan.

This is embarrassing. Let's at least get through 5 or 6 conference games first. There is no question this was a terrible game, but the question is...is this who we are or is this an outlier?

There has been 73 conference games to judge Groce on.

He's a combined 29-44 over those 73 games. This is not acceptable.

People aren't really over reacting.. it's built up over the last 2 coaching staffs and people are tired and frustrated with the product put on the floor. Our defense is bad and we have several players that shoot almost every time they touch the ball for fear that they won't get it passed to them again. I am done watching Groce led teams, it's just not fun anymore. We should never, I repeat, NEVER get beaten by 20-30 points. Talent is wasted on this coach, and the fact that Tate still sees any minutes is proof enough that we need a new coach.

If we got Lovie in football, I'm excited to see what Whitman can do with basketball. It's time to open your eyes and realize that we are spinning our tires and sinking further into the mud. Anyways, I'm done ranting, but people need to wake up and stop blindly supporting bad basketball. I feel bad for the kids and want to support them, but the madness needs to stop.

I'm thinking the only reason Whitman didn't get rid of Groce is because he didn't have a home run hire lined up like Lovie. I'm thinking/hoping/praying that Whitman has been doing some work in the background.

+1

29-43 in conference record over a 5 year span without any coaching staff changes and people want to give that regime year 6?

What's it called when you do the same thing over and over expecting different results again?

Does this count as Groce's farewell season? Should opposing coaches be giving him gifts at the games?

Lon Kruger, Fred Hoiberg, Cuonzo Martin, Archie Miller. Focus on these four. I doubt Kruger would leave OU unless fired which is not very likely. If Hoiberg becomes available I think the chances of getting him would be pretty good. I don't know much about Martin but I can't imagine he'd want to leave Cal for Illinois. Who knows though. Miller would be a good hire and I'm sure we could get him, but he also seems like the kind to leave after getting a better offer.

On a serious note, I agree that Whitman just needed time to get his ducks in a row. I have faith he will do what is necessary for the future of the program.

I share the reluctance over Miller...see Kruger and Self. However, I love the idea of Hoiberg re-establishing himself in college. It would be a splash hire, since no one really blames a college coach for not adjusting and succeeding in pros.

Was really hoping the WVU game would be the only beat down this season. Sure did not think it would happen to start off BTN play. Frustrating.

I'd love Hoiberg for multiple reasons. 1: He's a great fit. 2: Very good coach. Gets the most out of the talent he has. 3: Iowa fans hate him, and I go to Iowa :thumb:

No other program will hire Miller away from IL unless he rights the ship here first with some solid seasons. If that happens we will be in better shape than we are now, so the risk is low IMO.

5 yrs now

same scenario over Groces tenure!! No offense ran, jacking 3's is not offense! no defense, no rebounding!! Tired of rah nrah Groce! Has to be fired, mid-season is fine with me! Sub patterns are pathetic!! Lucas needs pt, tate should not sniff minutes!! This is all so obvious!! Why does Groce not see it? Does he want to be fired? If so , hope he gets his wish!!

Very good point. Kruger certainly set the table for Self.

See Kruger and Self? See what? The high water mark for Illinois basketball over the last 20 years? I would be so unbelievably happy to have our program where Kruger/Self left it. PLEASE Whitman, deliver us a coach so desirable that the NBA/NCAA Blue Bloods want to poach him after a few very successful seasons.

That sounds better than just about every moment of Illinois basketball over the last decade to me. I really hope if there is a search this year, we embrace any coach talented enough to be compared to Kruger/Self. And avoid the "I am nervous he will leave us" discussion.

What I meant was that both were lured away, so I understand some reluctance over hiring someone who may use Illinois as a stepping stone.

However, I would not let that stand in the way of progress, since both of those hires improved our program.

I just have preference for Holberg, because I think he would be a bigger hire, and I like his style of play.

Lots of people here complaining about our offense and quick shots. Which is fine. Just don't ask for Hoiberg cause that's kinda what he's known for, playing fast, trying to score in transition without running set offense.

Every coach is going to do what is best for their career long term. There is no difference between Hoiberg and Miller in that regard. In fact, Hoiberg left his Alma mater for another gig. Miller has remained pretty loyal to Dayton while having several High Major programs come after him. I could care less if either left us after proving successful here, but I see little to no reason to think that more likely of Miller than Hoiberg.

At least Hoiberg has offensive sets that have been proven they work in college basketball.

He also had final four level talent. He prefers to not run set offense, which is why he's so big on transition and secondary.

The fact that not one of the 3 bench assistants have been changed over the past 5 years is mind boggling given this teams diminishing returns over the past three seasons. Groce just seems to be too loyal to a fault. Someone please tell me what Dustin has done for this program? Why is he still here? Honestly asking.

stubborness

refusal to play most talented players, regardless of what class are in,not changing assistants, even though glaringly obvious needs done, x's and o's lacking terribly!!! bring in a quonzo Martin, Archie Miller, Greg Marshall, Please Mr Whitman, illini fans deserve better!!Groces record speaks for itself!!
