Before expansion the SEC academically was basically Vandy and UF, and a big gulf to the next school, maybe Georgia, Auburn or Tennessee. TAM and Mizzou fit into that gulf. Bama is really trying to convert athletic success to academic. There were two national merit semifinalists in my daughters high school class that received full rides to Bama, and nothing from our local BIG schools.
All three of my nieces went to college at UT on scholarship. They are all 3 very smart young ladies. None of them were going to a mid-level B1G school on scholarship. #Perspective

If Lovie and gang can land Thomas, any idea where we would jump in the overall rankings. I saw someone that said we could go up to #5 in the B1G, but looking at 247 we are #41, which is pretty solid. Think it could jump us 8 spots or so? Really hoping we can land this kid. Very impressed with this class but I am REALLY looking forward to seeing what Lovie can do for next years class with more time.

If we were to get Jeff Thomas, Reggie Roberson, Rey Estes, Louis Dorsey, and CJ Cotman to round out our skill positions and then add Bobby Roundtree and Alex Palczewski, the 247 class calculator projects our class as #21 in the country (based on current rankings - I'm guessing Dorsey will be reevaluated as a low 3-star). Obviously, other schools will continue adding prospects, so that might not hold up. And of course it's unlikely we'll land all those guys. Pretty exciting, though!

I also had that question last week. At the time, using 247's class calculator just adding Thomas alone bumped us up to #26.

It will be interesting to see how the staff handles RS'ing "their" players.

I do not think Lovie and Staff are even thinking about RS anyone right now while they are recruiting. Other then OL/DL and QB I would love for us to get to the point of not recruiting anyone with the idea of them RSing. If this class keeps rolling with the FR/RSFR that played this year in 2 years we should have a good base group of Players, who we bring in from 2019 on should be comeing in to play even if they are playing limited rolls as FR except our Linemen who just really benefit from a year of getting bigger and stronger WR/DB/RB thatwe are after should be kids who play 4 years and are gone 3 years if really good

The sleeping giant is stirring or at least talking in it's sleep.

Hope this happens! :illinois:

Yep. There're a few more guys targeted. If we land the bulk of them (likely, IMO), this is an outstanding first class* and augers very well for future classes.

* - given who we are, where we've been and that the staff has only been together for 8-9 months

After reading up a little more, it sounds like the most likely guys are Thomas (probably won't qualify), Roberson, Dorsey, Palczewski, and potentially Fedd-Jackson. If we add the latter two to the guys already in the fold, I like the future of our O-Line.

Cotman would be great, but is a long shot. Estes - hard to say. I think if Thomas comes he may flip. Not sure he's a difference maker at the B1G level regardless. Roundtree sounds like an Indiana lean. We definitely need as much help at DE as we can get, so hopefully he comes.

Given our current targets, it feels like we'll be playing the transfer market hard to shore up the defensive line and defensive backfield. I'd honestly still love to get Jeremiah Briscoe as a 5th year transfer QB, just in case Lawson isn't ready for prime time. Not expecting it to happen, but would be nice.

DE E. Bagner JUCO
WR Thomas
WR Roberson
OW Dorsey (offensive weapon)
OL Palczewski
OL Fred Jackson (maybe)
DB Knight
ATH Reyes

Would be my "wish list" I guess.

With my top priority guys being:
Roberson, Bagner, Thomas, Roberson, Palczewski, Dorsey

I would happily add Cotman to both lists but still unsure if we even have more then a glimmer of chance with him.

I haven't heard much of anything for Mitchell, and Mixon seems to have fallen on our board a little bit with the recent commitments on the OL. I haven't really heard the other 3 names at all of late.

Is there still mutual interest in California DT Boe Tufele?
During the summer, it seemed liked the staff was really high on him.

we have a nice class shaping up in Lovie's first year, but one thing that has stuck out to me watching some of these bowl games is the speed in the south. How do they improve our overall team speed and athleticism? It is completely unfair to make any comparisons to Alabama, but passively watching that FSU/UM tilt, the overall team speed on that FSU squad was superior to UM. UM obviously has some athletes, and make us very pedestrian, but if we eventually want be in some very good bowls, how far to we have to go to improve this facet? We are moving the right direction, but we need some talented burners offensively and defensively. The potential WR corps looks to be in that mold.

Think we'll take at least 2 more DEs: one JUCO (Bagner, Boykin) and one prep (Roundtree, Callendar). Really, really hope our pitch resonates with Cotman. He'd be a huge get. Need to add the Nashville, TN area punter to the wish list.

WOW! Thomas is owning the Under Armour game! 44 and 79 yard TD recepts with impressive YAC.

I really hope he can get by the clearinghouse. I believe he will be ours if he can. And man, what a game changer that would be to have him, Dudek, Turner, and Smalling on the field. Receiver would go from our worst group to our best. Crazy if it happens.

Seems to be shoe in for player of game. Could this possibly be a negative for us in terms of interest by better caliber/further along programs that might not have the academic standard UI has? Happy to see the young man play exceptionally well in just about the biggest showcase for high school talent, but on a selfish note, I feel like this is a negative for Lovie and Co.
