Indiana 96, Illinois 80 POSTGAME

Someone told me that once we got Black and Thorn back we'd be dynamos on the boards and not only that, but our defense would be much improved. Welp, outrebounded and gave up 96 points. Guess I shouldn't listen to Bluto.

Should really adjust the game plan. Trying to get Malcolm 3 first half fouls in 3 minutes was not the right recipe at the start. Brandon Miller would have known that.

So any time Hill is on bench we are sentenced to an epic beatdown. That's how fragile we are? We are in more trouble than I initially thought

We have a few players, beyond Malcolm, that look like they could be pretty solid, but they don't see the floor enough. Kipper and TJL are obvious, but I still have faith that DJW could be a very good player. He has athleticism and range. The issue seems to be confidence, which, honestly, seems to be a big factor with our team as a whole.

It's all well and good to talk about our comeback in the second half, but teams with a big lead often lose focus, and the other team wakes up. From the start, we lacked confidence, and only found it when the outcome was already established. Not a good sign.

There are no more moral victories for John Groce. This team does not defend well enough to be relevant.

The 5 second call out of a timeout killed the momentum. Cannot figure out why a TO was even called. But good grief. Terrible. I could have felt ok about the loss without that.

It hasn't been mentioned but Tracy was very bad in every way today. I'm kind of surprised because to me it looks mental. Which is the opposite of what I thought Tracy's issues would be.

I went to that miserable Maryland game (A team that started 3 fresh and 1 soph). This had same tone. They are ill prepared and don't come out with any fight. Spotting a team 20 pts - teams you could be and your not even competitive. This is not Illini basketball. This is representative of what Northwestern has been like for years. Groce needs to go. He's a great assistant coach/recruiter but has proven to fall short as head coach. This is his best team (outside of his inherited Weber team his first year) and look what he has done! We are NIT bound.

Groce played twelve players today. If you give more tick to Kipper, Tejon & DJW, then who do you take the minutes from? Or do you keep playing twelve?
From the last few games, take the time from Tate, Thorne, Abrams. Easy to see they are struggling.

Had to make a decision at half time to either watch the second half or drop by WalMart and watch a semi truck unload a shipment of frozen turkey......Headed to WalMart.

IMo I would never have a super short guard throw in the ball. On top of the fact that he is a frosh. Who has probably seen the floor less than he should at this point.

If you're gonna pretend like you don't know we're worse without him on the floor and can't extrapolate what happens during his regular 2 minute breaks to 15 minutes of one half I can't help you. Take the most important player off any team for 75% of a half and this is what you can expect.

20 point first half deficits? Yes hes our best player, but you have find ways to stay in games without him too. In addition, we gave up way too many open looks which happens whether Malcolm is in game or not. This game would not have been close whether he 3 or 0 first half fouls

Good point - our inbounds play is basically try to get MH or JCL open off screens for a 3 or throw the ball to half court. The 4 could make that inbounds pass.

All great points. A good game coach would recognize those issues. Not to mention would the TO even be called with the team starting to feel it a little.

Anyone else think crowdsource coaching is the way to go? Ford could sit there with a tablet and the wisdom of the crowd could make the lineup and "Zone or M2M" calls..:)

I've seen other coaches use short guards to inbound. But you had better have a reason for doing so. That was a weak play all around.

Or a team in cruise control with big lead. Soon as we cut it to 10, foot went back on gas.

They are also a bad defensive team. We scored 51 second half points. And you know crean had to be on them because he knew Malcolm would come in and go off.

I stand by the fact that Tate should never play a single minute unless tracy or TJL foul out. There is no excuse for him to ever get PT, even though he obviously wasn't the reason we lost today. People may not agree, but I think Thorne is pretty worthless down low. He is big and can move people around, but he still can't seem to put it together. I think DJW could develop into a good player if he got some PT.

Hill getting 3 fouls in 4 minutes isn't good, but our defense is the reason we lost today... that and it taking 6-8 minutes to get anything going offensively. We just aren't very good, even though we do have some talented players. Road games are going to be really rough this year so we better find ways to win at home if we want any chance at the tourney (not holding my breath).

Bottom line is that this loss is more frustrating now than embarrassing in March when the committee looks at it. Beat Fichigan on Wednesday and we are still on track. Just get 3 of these first 7 and we are in fine shape.
