Maryland 62, Illinois 56 POSTGAME

Seniors, excluding Morgan, should be ashamed. They expect freshmen to make their season. Just so tired of the continuous failure and mediocre seasons

Agreed. Kipper took some bad ones in the 1H, JCL took quite a few bad ones, and Malcolm really needs to throw away the pump-fake-for-a-foul move. Te'jon is an excellent passer, but we still don't have any consistent scoring from that position, which hurts.

I don't know yet what kind of an outside shot Lucas has, but he had several good looks from the arc. On a couple you could see he thought about it but didn't fire, for whatever reason. Also, no floaters from him today.

So stop trolling an Illinois board and go post on a Redbird board.

He's not wrong...

It should hurt to hear that. We should be far and away the best team in the state. We're not, and that falls squarely on the shoulders of John Groce.

We're now -1 in BIG play. Plenty of opportunities upcoming to make up for it and honestly should have expected we would need to get AT LEAST 1 on the road this year because we weren't going to run the table at home.

I'm not saying he can't score, but we haven't really seen him make an impact in the points column with the exception of the FSU game. I think he can develop to be a bit more of a scorer (especially if we can ever get a big who can really run the pick and roll, of which we currently have none), but right now, we're not getting anything from that position on a game-to-game basis. Not to be read as a knock on TJL, just an observation.

Pretty sad second half. I don't think any team can win games with an offense scoring around 20 points in a half with a defense that stops playing. Not sure who Groce should play and who he should bench, but kind of tough being optimistic with this type of home game.

So what was the Half Time Adjustment Groce made leading by 5 at the half only to lose by 6 points?

That's what a good coach does to a bad coach. IMO. They adjusted their defense and we kept trying to run the same old plays against it.

Not ready to give up just yet only because it's Illinois' m.o to pull a W or 2 out of their rear end that they have no business winning. So I wouldn't be shocked to see a steal at Purdue or another unexpected victory in the coming weeks but I'm not too confident...Groce teams show flashes of promise that they can ever maintain or build off of. That goes on Groce. Truly frustrating.

none.

Turgeon made adjustments. Groce did not. Maryland was better in the second half than they were in the first.

Jcl, Hill, Abrams were bad today. Kipper and tjl saw major minutes. You want Groce to play the walkons??

How about he play TJL,Nichols,DJW,Black, and Morgan and send a message either gets your heads together or be ready to come and sit next to me ,Tate ,and Mike

Looked like he was a step behind on defense, looked lost on offense. Hard to win when your 6th year pg plays like this. I don't know what Groce can do differently, this loss should be on the players not Groce.

True, some of the players didn't play well. However, Groce does not make any adjustments. When we went in a drought not shot came from inside. As a coach you call a play to go inside. Also, when guys aren't producing give them some pine time!!!!

I generally don't comment, but do enjoy the insight you all bring. I will comment this one time because I am at the point of frustration. NCAA basketball is won with good guards and good coaching. I don't want to comment on the coaching yet because I can't get past the guard play. This team continually gets outplayed at the 1 and 2, unless they are hitting the three(JCL). It's not an overly talented backcourt and it consistently shows itself on the road, where its paramount to have good guards(mentally and physically) and it shows itself in close games when they need to create offense and they end up with contested threes late in the shot clock. It's hard to blame Groce's coaching, when he has the backcourt he has. Very hard to script and execute. I can blame his recruiting, which is why he has what he has.

Illinois State has lost to a 9-9 Murray State team and an awful 9-7 Tulsa squad. I'm assuming the other team in Illinois you think is better than us is Northwestern, only time will tell on that one.
