I think McCamey was a good guard, but he was hampered by a coach and a system. While I agree that we have not had a great guard under Groce, that is certainly not the only issue. I know it's probably not what your suggesting, but we can't give Groce a pass just because he hasn't gotten the guard that helped his run in the NCAA at Ohio.

BP3 and Dj?

the only "dog" games where i think we have a shot are @psu, @iowa, @NW, but i wont commit to thinking we can win a couple of those until i see a decent road performance from this team

I don't see us winning any against those three. They're all playing well.

Been stalking this site for years, first post. My biggest issues is with our "leaders"on the court. Abrams constantly makes bad decisions on both ends of court. He is a sub par point guard and a slow 2 guard. He offers on help defensively against quicker players and looks at officials after reaching like he doesn't understand fouls. Hill begs for fouls and does not go strong. He looks to be bailed out instead of being aggressive. When he looks to finish instead of looking for contact he scores and gets fouled. Look at ,
Maryland they chin the rim and we don't. We fade away and drift on drives.

This has been a issue from day one with Groce teams. We need a coach and players who attack and don't hope for other team to let us win.

Leron had a good game. He would have easily had a double double if not for the foul trouble

14 points
6-10 FG
2-2 from 3
9 rebounds
1 assist, 1 turnover
4 fouls

We really need to get contributions from him in the second half. We keep getting a really nice spark out of the gate from Leron, but then he goes invisible. I think he had 11 in the first half today, and a 3 in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd, right? I'm not really sure why that seems to continue to happen, not implying it is a fault of Leron's.

Well I asssume Leron didn't do well because he was in foul trouble most of the second half. :)

I feel sorry for Tracy, he came in on fire and looked like he was going to be a difference maker. I just wonder if he is getting worn down by by having no faith in the system anymore. It probably takes a toll on a man who has worked so hard to get back to the game.

Please. :hand: More like TA has no faith in his own game anymore.

A good point guard makes everybody better, we don't have one right now.

In most situations yes but in our situation Im not so sure a PG could overcome the band habits of our pseudo guards . They are pretty set in their ways .

How many second half minutes did he have? He only had 1 foul in the first half. He didn't get his third until 7:40, and his fourth until 6:24 left in the game. He had plenty of minutes where he was available without foul trouble. :hand:

Well played first half. Did our players all get hit with a Stupid Stick at halftime? From about the 16 min mark until somewhere around the 5 min mark that was just hideous basketball.

JG may not have helped but most of that is on the players. Forced shots, dumb passes, just mistake after mistake.

We finally got it back together somewhat and tried to get back into it but still took too many questionable shots.

And what on earth has happened to Tracy Abrams? He looks worse and worse with each game. More harm than good at this point.

Maryland tried to give us the game and we could not take it. Mind boggling use of time outs, mind boggling substitution patterns. Game lost by coaching decision with 10 seconds left in the first half. TA is bringing nothing on offense or defense for us. Love the kids heart but he looks like he is 26 going on 50. He cannot stay in front of his man on defense. We have deceptive team speed, we are slower than we look. Can't get a 50/50 ball. Can't get to the free throw line. Seriously 10 free throws all day long. What defensive scheme is coach Groce trying to run, that as sophomores in college the players can't figure out. They have all been playing ball since grade school, it shouldn't be that tough. Sorry for the rant but I have been a fan since the Lou era and my frustration is finally boiling over. I hate to admit it but maybe we just don't have big ten caliber basketball players on the floor. I hope they right the ship and get it together but we need better from our coaches and players.

First tweet from halftime, second from postgame. It really is incredible, and numbers like these are why we see NUMEROUS 4-8 minute droughts throughout the season every freakin season regardless of personnel. I really hate this scheme.

Thanks for bringing this back up. This is why we can't chalk this loss up to shots just not going down. We are always making the offense harder than it needs to be. Combine that with subpar defense and it's kind of amazing we've won as many games as we have.

Completely agree with Applegate 20 post. Although I am a fan of Malcolm Hill neither he or Tracy has the quickness to run those kind of plays. That's where we need to get the ball to the younger guys in those situations.

Surprised at the range that Black showed tonight. We need TJL to also step up and knock down a couple of shots when JCL and Hill aren't scoring.

It is pretty simple, the Illini lack the ability to consistently take the ball to the basket. They are a jump shooting team. That includes 3s and the midrange. When those fall like Michigan we look great. If so fall like the first half we look fine. When they don't it is easy to double the post and watch us miss. We lack the ability to create off the dribble which limits us. It basically means this team will be up and down offensively.

A jump shooting team that cant shoot ?

Its perfectly fine to be a jump shooting team but thats really not how we play with the sluggish pace ,over dribbling, lack of ball movement.

It could simply be the team refusing to embrace their true selves though . A team of jump shooters who want to be iso scorers. :tsk:
