I don't see any games on the schedule that we have no chance of winning. Maybe @Northwestern but we always seem to play close there. The rest of our road games are against lower tier Big Ten teams and I think the Wisconsin game could be closer than people think. Being at home makes a huge difference. If we win the next two (which is a big if, @PSU will be tough), that would put us at 4-5 which a lot of people said they'd be happy with after the first 9 games.

I am not trying to attack you, but with Wisconsin's swing offense I don't see us finding an answer. Happ is going to have a field day down low and Bronson is going to do what he does on the perimeter. Please don't bet on us unless it's +12ish:thumb:

I'll add onto your thoughts and say it again: John Groce has never beaten Wisconsin in his almost 5 years at Illinois.

I'm blown away by all of the "I'm not watching" or "I'm trying to find something else." No matter how bad it gets, this is your team, right?

Don't worry, whenever the day comes the program gets back to the level you think it should be, we'll let all of you "fans" back on the bandwagon.

I for one, will be cheering like crazy for the Orange and Blue regardless of who is the coach and what their record is, game in and game out, through the good times and the bad.

True character (or fandom) is revealed when the chips are down, it was easy being a "fan" in '05, just ask Bill Murray.

Simply put, Go Illini, beat Iowa!

Our offense is so stagnant off the ball. And when lucas doesn't have the ball up top it sticks like crazy. Just a horrible offense. I've never seen a team take 5-10 seconds to figure out what play they are running once it's been called from the sideline. Insane. Like they don't know the plays well enough.

This to me continues to be the issue. Groce just can't communicate in simple terms what is needed from his players. We just continue to see bits and pieces of what he wants. He should have simplified this offense. It certainly isn't the players issues. We've all been around those people who complicate the simplest of tasks.

Pretty sure people who are still on here at this point are die hard fans. Doubt Bill Murray is cruising the message board, but if he is, hi Bill.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to spend your time doing something other than watching the team you love get crushed. If someone wanted to show you a video of your family member getting dismembered, would you want to watch, or are you not a real family member because you choose to avert your eyes? I'll be happy if we beat Iowa. I'll be thrilled if we turn things around and start a real win streak. In the meantime, I'll occupy myself with playing jacks and reading the telephone book because I'm only in the 40th percentile for masochism.

Seconded. Man, if you are still posting, reading, or even sporadically visiting an Illinois basketball message board in almost-February 2017, you are the elite of the elite die hards. This is like top one-half of one percent stuff.

Yeah, I'm with you. I've never understood that argument. I love my university, so I want to see what's best for them. If our major sport is in a death spiral, it hurts and I don't want to watch it.

I have a busy life with a lot of things going on. I don't want to carve out time for something that makes me miserable.

Just checked the stats this morning...According to CBSSportsLine Illinois has the #11 SoS and the #50 RPI.

That sounds like a bubble team or low-seed NCAA invite to me. Lunardi also had us in the "next 4 out".

That means we still have a beating heart. It may be faint and it definitely is dying, but if they figure some way to pick this up, we have a "chance".

You guys that are counting the Penn State game a sure win are dreaming. They are really good, and it'll be a dogfight to beat them. I'm hoping we do, but....

Agreed....

Add to that, this team seems to have lost what little swagger they had to start with.

I predict we get our Jok's handed to us..... 77-67 Hawkettes (

Playing a d2 school is costing us about 10 spots in the RPI right now. That was a very bad idea, although it wasn't much of our choice I don't think.

I find it hard to really argue there's any plausible road to the tournament either way, because we still have to go on the road and win gameS -- not just 1.

My interest in this season was waning, then we had that wonderful performance against Michigan that woke me up and got me hopeful and paying attention....followed by a return to form that says the team is not even circling the wagons to defend themselves. I actually think we'll win this one, but mostly because of who we're playing.

Mathematically, we're still in it. Which is what fans say when their team is out of it.

Well they're a poor defensive team to begin with. ;)

Sure, the resume is still clean right now. It's just unlikely we're going to be able to maintain or add to it enough to move in the right direction on the bubble.

How do you figure? You'd have to replace that game with a likely 250+ RPI team.

Not true. It probably is helping our RPI and strength of schedule since it doesn't count against either. A low RPI filler team, which we would have booke dinstead, would have been a drag on both numbers.

The resume has the Illini very much alive. A couple of wins this week would move us up and possible back in his bracket. The problem isn't the resume but how the team has looked. If they can flip the switch and play with consistency they could still easily make the tournament. The problem is the team does not seem to be trending in that direction. For the record I am an optimist and still have hope for a strong finish.

I ran the math in a post in the offseason. Obviously impossible to tell where exactly where we'd be without knowing whod wed replace it with. It has a much bigger effect now then it will later admittedly though. Adding 1 win is worth about .007 RPI points to us as we speak. Replacing the d2 game with say beating 7-13 team (which the #250 team is right now) would hurt the sos part of our RPI by about .001. So yeah, still a net gain.

Interesting. I assume that you math holds true if it were a sub-300 team?

Groce previews Iowa

Groce: Excited to get back out there tomorrow night. Great to be back at home.

Groce: Some guys have really built off they practiced and played on Saturday

Groce:Lot of the points Michigan accumulated were off of our turnovers. Too sloppy.

Groce: Iowa a young team. I really have enjoyed watching them play.

Groce: Jok as good a scorer and jump shooter as there is in the country.

Groce: I'd like for certain lineups to be more consistent and stand out.

Groce: Mike Thorne on Saturday played. He was an absolute load in practice during the week. Played like "You got to play me."

Groce: Mike Thorne on Saturday played. He was an absolute load in practice during the week. Played like "You got to play me."

Groce: Te'Jon is doing well. Grading out well consistently.

Groce: We have to be a lot less sloppy with the ball.

Groce: Defense was pretty good against Michigan but turnovers allowed too many easy buckets.

Groce: We have goals (of NCAA Tournament) but at end of day we have to climb the ladder and take one step at a time.

Groce: We have to play better than we did the other day. That's the first step.

Groce: (The seniors) see the hour glass sifting.

Groce: Thorne and Tate playinglike pants are on fire in practice. When you're a senior, you realize the hour glass is sifting.

Groce on question about effort on defense: Certainly a part of it, but execution is a big part of it.

Groce: To me, it's clearly more the execution on defense more than effort. Have to do your job on every possession.

Groce: We've got a very unique team. "Older" team but only two guys have played with Abrams.

Groce: On paper, you assume older and experienced together. The connection part through playing together is lacking.

Groce: Some people didn't appreciate Egwu. Some did (this guy). He erased a lot of stuff. Have to do that as collective now.

Groce giving some really interesting, insightful answers today on rotation and lack of defensive connectedness -- even if they are sad.

Groce: Limiting Abrams' practice minutes right now. He fights me on it.

I guess I hadn't considered the effect when our own winning % is so low, you're right that does mean a win has more impact. But it also means we're probably not good enough for it to really matter anyway.

If we played someone like #350 North Carolina A&T, that would be a good way to hurt our rpi a lot. Our points scored from SOS would fall by about .014. We'd still pick up about .007 for the win, but still a big net loss there. Worth about 7 spots in the RPI and would fall more once you tally the final 25% that makes up the rpi.
