I see the point you're trying to make but please don't compare Hill to the likes of Kenny and Nick..... Not even close to the savvy, high octane play they displayed in their game.

To further your point though..... What if Henson, Kruger, Self, or even Weber were coaching this team? I think ANY of them could take this team and make the NCAA's.

Oh how I miss those days

Well Groce did come in and take what was mostly Weber's roster to the dance in his first year.

Henson probably would have struggled with this team. Weber did struggle with teams with marginal point guards or he would still be here. It all starts with recruiting a total roster.

By the way, I've never compared Hill to Kenny or Nick. I'm the one arguing that our talent is less than adequate especially at the PG

Yes, let's continue to make ourselves feel better about our crap coach, by tearing down his predecessor yet again. Never mind the fact that said predecessor has his team (with less talent and in a harder conference, mind you) is doing better this year. All of that happening after he had to blow up the roster 2 years ago when Foster and a few others couldn't lay off the weed. :hand:

I think it all started when someone argued that Weber could do better with this roster. So it was the anti Groce crowd that brought Weber into the discussion.

From my perspective, this era of basketball belongs equally to Weber and Groce.
Recruiting killed them both. Perhaps Weber has figured it out. Doesn't change that the wheels fell off with his recruiting.

The farther you get into one coaches tenure, the less you can blame his predecessor. Usually by year 3 and sure as hell by 5, you shouldn't be pointing to the previous coach and saying "he's a big part of the reason we're not succeeding right now."

I never said what you imply ie, I didn't say Bruce is to blame for Groce not succeeding. Together they put together one of the worst recruiting eras in Illinois basketball in my lifetime. Lou hit a skid after the allegations and was pretty quickly gone.

Weber has 1 signature win and a couple of close losses which has some crowing about his coaching acumen.

Here is a sobering reminder. Kansas St. is behind Illinois in RPI with a strength of schedule SUBSTANTIALLY lower than ours. They aren't in any better shape than we are for tourney purposes.

I'm guessing Weber will petition the committee to count their game vs Kansas as a win since the refs obviously blew that call.

It is funny how 4 years can change the tone. If I remember correctly, during the last coaching search many on this board thought that Mike Brey was an awful coach.

They'vebeen impressively above average mediocre for a long time. Always make the tournament, sometimes a sweet 16. The last 3 years this one included they've been great. They won the ACC tournament in 2015.

I sure hope our AD is on the phone to Fred Hoiberg, seems to me opportunity knocks with the wreck that is the Bulls

the people asking for Hoiberg..is he really going to be that great? After everything that is happening, you think he could recruit Chicago?

There is no way we are getting Hoiberg. As an Iowa State Grad who follows their program very closely, He loved being at Iowa state because it was home for him but he didn't love the college game. He didn't like getting calls from players at 2am. He didn't like having to deal with the disciplinary side of the college game. He prefers the more mature, professional atmosphere of the NBA. He is not coming back to coach in college and if he did, it won't be for our beloved Illini.

For the record, his teams weren't soft. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

He's gonna have to turn down a lot of money, because college is going to be after him, but I heard these same things.

And honestly, if he's not 1000% in, we should be skeptical.

Agree his teams may have been soft. But if you can show where NBA player behavior is that much more mature than college ballers, especially if what I heard (but did not see) one of his players telling him 'F-You' during a game at a tense time...

Not sure if Hooberg is the problem.

Need more data on him before I say, 'Hoiberg or bust!', though...

Just caught up with the thread, and one thing that dismays me are the number of comments about "if we somehow make the tourney, Groce will be retained." I'm not dismayed that posters are saying it, I understand the comments, I'm just dismayed that squeaking into the tourney is a positive sign. I think it's fool's gold. Even if we somehow manage to get in, I still think Groce should be replaced. Managing to get in once in the last four years is not good enough, and it shouldn't matter that it happened in the last year, he needs to be judged on the whole time he's been here, and it's been mediocre at best. If we retain him, I think we will continue to wallow in that same mediocrity. Just my opinion, feel free to fire away if you find fault, I wouldn't blame you; I'm operating more on emotion than logic at this point.

For those upset at how Groce teaches defense, remember that Fred doesn't even attempt to teach it.

If they squeak in, I'd like to see him back. That said I still think a veteran coach should join his staff that is a better game planner. Much like Hoiburg had with Sadler at ISU

Man, that'd be great.

Pretty clear at this point that that's not gonna happen. Single-mindedness is part of the Groce experience, for better or worse.

I know his head coaching in the big 10 was bad, but would Groce add a guy like Lickliter? They were both on staff with Matta correct? Get the veteran voice while still in the comfort zone. Either way I'm off subject. Back to finding his replacement.
