Question for whomever, do 5th year guys/guys not signing until the summer (Lawson) count towards this spring recruiting class or are those separate? I'm just trying to figure out how many actual rides are potentially left.

The Spring signing period ends on April 1st.

I'm not sure if a guy like Lawson or a 5th year transfer would sign anything. They would simply enroll here.

We probably have 5 or 6 scholarships remaining.

I think they'd have to count towards this class, pretty sure the only ones that can be back counted are early enrollees.

On the former, I interpreted "one getting away" and "missing out on" as the same thing, thus "miss". I don't feel my list is really off-base there. By that measure though, you can add Jalen Harris. There's also an argument for CJ Cotman, although we didn't recruit him for that long.

And the latter is true.

No, your list was fine, just adding to it. I guess it's a matter of how viable you view the recruits, it seems like we had a reasonable chance at Debose, I didn't think Harris was anything but a pipe dream and Cotman never visited.

Figured I'd get in on the action.
Don't have Photoshop on my work computer, so I had to use Paint and Powerpoint, haha.

I see a future left out or water boy by the time you are an upperclassman

That's a winner!!

If you were the 42nd ranked kid in Florida how good are you in Illinois? Obviously not an exact science.

I am Extremely Proud to be an ILLINOIS FAN TODAY.

Today's recruiting class signing under Lovie Smith has given the swagger back when we talk Football at ILLINOIS.

The talent coming in is very exciting.

My football friends in Florida says Keep you eye on MIKE EPSTEIN from St Thomas Aquinas. He is an absolute stud- you guys got a really good player.

Likely a special teams water boy.

That being said, I think I'm going to the NFL combine next month through an NFL FanPass promotion, and I'll get to run the 40-yd dash. Maybe I'll have a Dennis Quaid "The Rookie" experience?

according to 247 this year, the 42nd ranked kid in Florida would have been 6th in Illinois, just ahead of Ricky Smalling, our highest ranked recruit.

Well, there's the three of us, and Lou Tepper.

I think we all agree that the team starts with both sides of the line. But a very good punter helps a lot.

I'm reading this late and catching up but I thought this was hilarious.

:D

Based on our results today, and after looking at the top 25 recruiting teams today on si.com, it would seem reasonable to me, anyway, that a goal of 10 4 stars for next year can be achieved. I mean, come on, even that mary lander team signed 11 of them.

I visited just one site (247) this evening. Initial observations:

- MD kicked major butt today! Coaching or Under Armour $$$?
- ILL #10 out of 14 Big 10 teams, and just ahead of NW
- Even Rutgers out-performed us. Wow.
- Only Purd, Ind and Minn are left out of the Top 50
- Iowa, Wisc, Nebraska from the West are still ahead of us
- Of the top 50 teams, only ILL, Baylor and Mizzou got zero 4star/5star recruits

I was actually hoping for a little bit more.......but I guess it will take some time. Am I being too impatient?

Maybe Illini baseball will be good again this year. I need a winning team (other than the Cubs)!

There is very little difference separating the rankings of 7 through 11. The key things to look at is did we address our needs? What other schools did we beat out to land these guys? What areas did these guys come from?

I think if you look at our class through these 3 factors it may come out a little more positive than you are now.

IMO we hit home runs along the D-Line and O-Line with this class with depth and potential star power. Strengthening our line was a must

And please don't under estimate the upside potential for our coaching staff to coach these kids up and over their ceiling. Lovie pointed this out in his presser just now. The most experienced NFL-based staff.

247 rankings basically weigh down our class and they evaluate the least frequently of anyone. That's key for us because we had 3 of our better recruits miss their junior years and then some. A lot of the quality in this class was identifying guys in the senior years (Hobbs especially as one of the biggest risers in the country, albeit he played his junior year). It's no real coincidence the site, Scout, that rates our class the most favorably also does the most frequent evaluations.
